Generative artist Dmitri Cherniak's Ringers #879 (aka the Goose) non-fungible token (NFT) sold for a full price of $6.2 million on Thursday during a live auction at Sotheby's auction house in New York City that featured artworks seized from bankrupt crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC).
And the winner is: PUNK6529 .
- Long-form on-chain generative art is an act of faith by the artist and the minter.
Unlike almost any other art form, neither the artist nor the initial collector know what the piece will be at the moment it is collected.
This is, for me, the most magical part about it.
There are 1,000 Ringers.
- Nobody, Dmitri Cherniak included, knew what they would be when his code was deployed to the blockchain.
- There are very few generative NFTs that are emergent.
In other words, nobody is discussing how many pegs or what background colors Ringer 879 has - it is just the "Goose"
OK, so what? Why does this matter?
Of course he had some idea about the spread of outputs that would be produced but nothing about the specifics.
- I think it matters because it says something fundamental about how long-form generative art works -
✅that the algorithm can surprise everyone (even the artist)
and
✅that the algorithm is itself a player on the field.

Then, does it drive meaning? Social construction? Do you think about it? Can you recognize it? Does it cause emotions and opinions? Does it reflect something bigger than itself? Is it memetic?
- Is that true for the Goose?
Of course. We have all been watching and waiting for this auction for months.
It is not some error that the market-clearing price for the Goose was 10x some other superb generative pieces auctioned last night.
