ECÒL was founded in the summer of 2016 by Emanuele Barili, Cosimo Balestri, Olivia Gori and Lorenzo Perri as a platform for architecture and research, an itinerant office based in Prato, Florence and London. We define pure geometry as an accomplished architectural gesture, as an immediate spatial producer. Looking for a new iconography still rich of symbolism, we use geometry as a tool to address

intuitively human actions and to trigger spontaneous social engagement. Working towards fading the line between architectural practice and theory we believe in an inclusive approach seeking collaborations in multiple fields. ECOL’s work extends from International competitions to local interventions at the smaller scale.

The new paved surface, which reconnects the pedestrian axis coming from the south with the Badia area via Suor Luisa Street, marks the transition from a space dominated by vehicle traffic to an open and safe public area. The difference in level between the roadway and the square has been reconfigured along the street edge, giving the town center a continuous and accessible surface, free from architectural barriers.

-

The redevelopment of Via Braga and Piazza Galilei restores a place for gathering and social life in Vaiano, reimagining an area that historically had already served this function. The intervention expands pedestrian surfaces, reconnects the network of pathways, and enhances the presence of greenery, offering the community a central space able to host events and activities while strengthening collective identity.

BONZA! is a sequence of spaces designed and built between 2024 and 2025. A former industrial warehouse in Prato, reimagined as a place for leisure and conviviality.

The spatial organization follows the division into four bays, established by three reinforced concrete frames. To maximize flexibility, the project introduces light and movable partitions between the bays, allowing for multiple configurations. The beam-column frames, with their textured rough finish, create a visual rhythm that contrasts with the smoother wall surfaces. These walls are not only architectural elements but also active programmatic supports, functioning as bike racks, coat hangers, storage units, kitchen walls, shelving, record holders, and seating.

BONZA!

CONCRETE CAST BATHROOM

The bathroom is designed through board-formed cast-in-place concrete furniture. The vanity is a monolithic concrete block with two cast basins. To cast these two sinks, repurposed stainless steel bowls from IKEA were used as molds. Above the sinks, wall-mounted brushed stainless steel fixtures provide a precise and minimal counterpoint to the rough tactility of the concrete. A bench element, also cast from concrete and anchored into the wall, extends the material language of the vanity offering functional seating. The lighting is integrated into the corrugated sheet metal ceiling system.

BAGNO IN CLS GETTATO IN OPERA

The project involves the restoration of an area of approximately 160 sqm. The work includes insulating the walls and flooring, upgrading and redesigning all systems, and introducing a climate control solution suited to the existing structure. From a functional perspective, the intervention only partially alters the pre-existing uses of garage, storage, and bathroom, reorganizing them into more efficient layouts while adding new dedicated areas for social interaction and relaxation.

BONZA!

To ensure the best positioning of the urban furniture, in relation to existing activities present on the area (such as the regular weekly market) the interventions was enriched by the contribution of , which through the creation of a number of temporary and modular setting devices was able to test the best areas to install benches.

Despite the temporary nature of the project, 4 sqm of asphalt were permanently de-paved around each tree, and equipped with urban furniture to provide shaded seating.

During the workshop, The modular elements were first planned on paper, then assembled and positioned by:

This project came to life thanks to the rich and intricate network of local actors whose collaboration was essential to creating the new public space. Their involvement made it possible to activate the space in meaningful ways and foster engagement.
A big thank you to:

for the two workshops held in April and May, offering an opportunity to temporarily free the square from cars, testing new uses, and directly involve the local community, especially the many children who live and play here.

, through the second edition of the Deklassata Festival along nearby Via Torino, contributed by hosting an event that introduced the intervention, re-enacting the charcoal ground drawing and inviting children to join in playfully.

brought the project to life again during the itinerant festival, animating the freshly completed pavement with performances and gathering a large crowd in the heart of the neighborhood.

The project transforms an unregulated parking lot into a pedestrian public space, addressing issues of street safety, livability, and parking regulation. In a densely populated neighborhood, this intervention expands the existing, yet insufficient, public space network by adding shaded seating, a new pedestrian area, and new crosswalks to connect the pedestrian path to the city center.

As a temporary action, the project reactivates public debate around the future of the area, testing a new layout for via Marx and the new pedestrian zone.

The painting process itself became a powerful moment of participation. Thanks to the support of and a large group of volunteers, many from schools of design and architecture, it was possible not only to apply the paint, but also to engage with local residents and passersby. This spontaneous interaction became an opportunity to gather ideas, listen to concerns, and witness a wide range of responses, from conflict to gratitude.

ML 3000x700 is a lighting fixture designed for offices, working spaces, laboratories, and any other place where efficient lighting and cable free surfaces are necessary.
Moon Landing evokes space imagery: the simple lines and use of technological materials give the element a futuristic and sharp appearance.
Through this lamp, electricity is brought from above and “lands” on the table below, thus eliminating the need for floor cables. The suspended design, connected to the ceiling by a thin hanging system and a corrugated stainless steel conduit, create a functional and lightweight workspace.
The uniform lighting complete this spatial vision, transforming the office into a place of concentration, modern and tidy, almost like a lunar station.

ML 3000x700 is a lighting fixture designed for offices, working spaces, laboratories, and any other place where efficient lighting and cable free surfaces are necessary.
Designed to bring electricity to the table above which it is installed, this system is particularly useful in environments where technology is an essential component of daily work.
The main body of the lamp is made of a sandwich panel with an aluminum honeycomb core, which gives the lamp both lightness and strength. The baffles, made of “L”-shaped folded aluminum sheets, help direct and distribute the light from the two lighting elements with opal polycarbonate diffusers downwards, creating soft, glare-free lighting, ideal for work environments. The corrugated stainless steel conduit allows electrical cables to pass through, providing power to the desk without needing floor modifications.

We develop unconventional strategies and aesthetics as a way to address contemporary issues and needs.

ECÒL is an architecture office and research platform based in Italy. Our work is the result of the observation and study of each project’s specific context. We are led by the desire to create exciting and interactive domains of expression.

Thinking: We believe in a generous approach to design, which translates into the will to maximize all project’s intrinsic potential, regardless of budget. We are constantly fascinated by culture and people, always looking for a new iconography rich of symbolism and meaning. We use geometry as a tool to intuitively address human reactions and trigger spontaneous social engagement. ECÒL’s work extends from International competitions to public space interventions at the smaller scale. In 2017 and 2018 the team has been awarded for projects on public space in Italy and Europe.

Areas of activity: Our work explores many scales, from public space to private renovations to graphic design, from local interventions to international competitions. Call us if you’re interested in working with us, establish a collaboration, or simply to get in touch.
