Let’s talk about litter. 🐓

Did you know that many farmers still struggle to find the best litter material for their coops? This process can be very tricky since the options for litter are so wide. 

Not all options for litter are recommended. Two examples are cedar or Bitterwood materials.

These materials are not safe due to their overpowering scent, which can be toxic to your birds. The scent from these materials can cause a wide range of respiratory symptoms and eventually lead to death. 

So, in your search for healthy, comfortable bedding for your birds, stay far away from materials with overpowering or strong scents.

Yes - litter can make your broilers sick 🤒

There are several causes for wet litter in your coop - Damaged waterer, diarrhea, or bad weather.

Wet litter increases bacterial growth that can lead to diseases such as a “cold”.

It can also cause odors (ammonia), insect/fly problems, footpad lesions and bruises of the breast.

Even if it’s a small area that’s wet - scoop it up, and replace it with dry, fresh litter.

After 24 hours and within the next 3-5 days, piglets should be processed. Below is an easy list for you to follow:

• Make sure all pigs are suckling
• Inject or give oral iron with 24 hours after birth
• Clip “needle” teeth when giving iron
• Castrate all unwanted males between 3-5 days
• Tail dock (cut the tail) if necessary
