Interview Recap | Citizen TV with Mashirima Kapombe
On 3rd June, 2025, I had the honour of joining an engaging and timely panel discussion on Citizen TV, conducted in Kiswahili by the brilliant Mashirima Kapombe. The topic: "road construction in Kenya"—a matter that deeply affects every citizen, from farmers to commuters to businesses.
Alongside Laikipia Senator Hon. Kinyua and Eng. Shammah Kiteme, President of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), I shared insights from the ground as a County Engineer, highlighting the realities, gaps, and potential in our road infrastructure system.
A key point of agreement on the panel was the **urgent need to restructure the governance of road construction**. The current roles of KeRRA (Kenya Rural Roads Authority) and KURA (Kenya Urban Roads Authority) often overlap with county functions, causing duplication, inefficiencies, and misalignment with local priorities.
Our collective opinion: Funds and full responsibility for county roads should be devolved entirely to county governments. This will ensure greater accountability, faster response to local needs, and better quality of work driven by engineers and decision-makers who understand the specific context of each region.
We believe in building not just roads, but strong, efficient systems to serve Kenyans fairly and sustainably.
Watch the full discussion and share your thoughts. It’s time to rethink how we build our future.
