Our journey began in 1956 when a small group of foreign-qualified architects founded the Ceylon Institute of Architects (CIA) after several meetings to draft a constitution. This original group also held membership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The inaugural meeting of the CIA was held on 11th September 1957 at the Tea Propaganda Board on Prince Street in Colombo Fort, att
ended by twelve dedicated architects. With a constitution modeled after the British Institute of Architects, the CIA aimed to become an allied society of the RIBA. This goal was achieved in 1960, by which time our membership had grown to 30. We received invaluable support from Sir Basil Spence, then President of the RIBA, and C.D. Spragg, then Secretary of the RIBA, who was later elected as the CIA's first Honorary Fellow in recognition of his assistance. The hard work and vision of our founders led to the establishment of a School of Architecture at the Institute of Practical Technology, Katubedda in 1961. Our continued growth and dedication to architectural excellence culminated in 1976 when the Ceylon Institute of Architects was officially incorporated as the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) by an Act of Parliament, known as the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects Law No.1 of 1976. Today, SLIA remains committed to promoting architectural excellence, supporting our members, and fostering a collaborative community.
