KALALGODA HOUSE

By Chinthaka Wickramage Associates Chartered Architects & Designers

www.cwadesign-studio.com

This house question how does one live outdoor life? How does one work with the light, the wind, the environment, foot traffic in a specific space? How do you frame the surrounding environment around you within the architecture? Outside environment is something that you can almost feel with the air passing through and having it so immediate.

After entering the residence & walking through the entrance passage, one encounters the rythum of different rooms & the narrow linear courtyard to one side, with undulating light. Kalalgoda house's garden is approached through verandahs & walkways and window arrangements.

The house is united by a single mono pitched roof supported by basic structural concrete & steel supports House is composed of masonry walls, wooden glazed wall planes rendered seemless by cement pigmented plaster to the exterior. Glass timber door windows become operable facades for the control of the interior climate, to tune with the long tropical monsoon & framing views of the nearby rubber plantation plot.

Extended roof eave is carefully cantilevered to provide protection from the sun, wind and the rain. The grey green colour cement plaster continuos screed mimic lichen patterns of the nearby rubber trees.

In contrast upper floor is more private & intimate. Bedrooms provide spaces to sleep, rest, read rest & reflect. The upper floor is positioned in mutual tension with the guarantee of simultaneous intimacy & isolation so essential to the domestic interior.

The combination of materials & landscapes, along with the 'thin' section facilitates cross ventilation & allows the house to have its own cool micro-climate in otherwise extreme hot & humid surroundings.

REFURBISHMENT OF NAVALAR VILLA, NALLUR, JAFFNA

By Chinthaka Wickramage Associates Chartered Architects & Designers

www.cwadesign-studio.com

A dilapidated old manor house in Jaffna peninsula, with warped roof beams, warped door windows and many structural defects were presented to the architects for refurbishment- by clients- to be refurbished as a retirement home for themselves who were returning to Sri Lanka after escaping to overseas due to the 25 years old North East civil war in Sri Lanka. Architects, decided to replace all warped roof beams and door windows during the refurbishment, introducing cantilevering bay windows to the swimming pool side, which was a novel idea to create an interesting three dimensional composition to the swimming pool side elevation to be overlooked over the ground floor living dining areas from upper floor.
With greatest difficulty all 3" x 4" wall plates of the roof which were not sufficient to take the load of the clay tiled roof was removed and replaced by 6" x 4" hardwood wall plates by the skilled carpentry team.

New triangular gable end panels were installed to the two gable ends giving a contemporary modern aesthetic to the otherwise traditional residence, in line with the vernacular architectural idioms of the Jaffna peninsula of Northern Sri Lanka. Special lighting design incorporating timber column fixed ‘up and down lighting’ was introduced to supplement for the lack of originally available lighting fixturesof the residence. Existing cut cement floor which was in very bad state, was tiled over with pressed-cement tiles, maintaining the original residence interior ambiance.
Calicut clay tiled roofs, white painted walls, dark timber columns, cement handled ceiling soffits and grey-white washed door windows give a certain contemporary aesthetics to the otherwise traditionally inclined residence. Decorative Floral patterned panels were introduced to the car porch entry gable to celebrate entry sequence of the residence. Colorful recycled antique door window panels were introduced to the staircase landing envelop cantilevered over to swimming pool side as a feature wall. Raised podium ‘Thinnai’ at entrance verandah and under staircase landing give a certain Jaffna vernacular flavor to the otherwise contemporary styled Jaffna residence in Nallur, the Hindu religious cultural hub of the Jaffna peninsula

a House built on a trapisium shaped sloping land in First lane, Pagoda, Nugegoda, using cement bricks for the complete building envelop. Envisaging the 'unfinished' raw quality of cement brick envelop and exposed concrete structural framework, the house is surrounded by many root ball replanted mature trees. To give warmth to the otherwise 'raw' ambiance of the house a timber deck mezzanine serve as a family living area in the upper floor. Grey powder coated aluminium glazed door windows contracts with the unfinished raw tactile quality of cement bricks against the sleek glass door windows. Single pitched lean to mono sloping roof follow the sloping contours of the land. Result is a textured tactile quality house, hidden among a cacoon of collection of mature trees in the leafy sub urb of Pagoda Nugegoda.

KAITHADY VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE, JAFFNA, SRI LANKA:

By Chinthaka Wickramage Associates Chartered Architects & Designers

www.cwadesign-studio.com

Architectural Objective of the project was to build a ‘robust’ vocational training center which can withstand years of wear and tear, in the extreme weather conditions of Jaffna peninsula. This vocational training Institute has been built to replace the facility that existed on the site in a group of residential buildings donated for the cause by a well-wisher. The design choose to renovate and conserve the two storey building on the site and a new ‘U’ shaped structure centered on this old building with large open workshop spaces added. A Wide verandah connects the new buildings and the old. The ‘U’ opens out to the breezes of the lagoon beyond and forms a three sided courtyard with shade of two existing Margosa trees on the site that have been preserved. This central space acts as a gathering and meeting space for the students and sometimes to allow an overflow of work space. The old and new buildings have been united by the use of black powder coated aluminium windows and a roof made from a steel frame covered with sandwich paneled zinc aluminium panels and gives and appropriate industrial aesthetic to the complex.
