Today marks the end of an intensive training on land use and land cover monitoring which commenced on 11th March 2026. The training targeted Malawi’s National Technical Working Group on Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), comprising experts from the Forest Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM), Forestry, Environmental Affairs, Land Resources, Surveys Department, CEPA and Catholic Relief Services (CRS).

The objective of the training was to strengthen national capacity to track land use, meet LDN targets, and fulfill UNCCD & UNFCCC reporting requirements.

Facilitated by the FAO Rome Office, the training is expected to enable institutions to enhance their technical capacity in land use and land cover monitoring, deepen collaboration across sectors, and establish a comprehensive Malawi land use and land use change database that will guide sustainable land management and climate reporting for the country’s future.

The project has commenced a three-day Green Value Chains (GVC) and Behaviour Change (BC) strategies validation workshop at Thunzi Lodge in Liwonde, Balaka District, running from today through Thursday. The workshop seeks to review the strategies and confirm whether the strategic priorities are relevant, realistic, and aligned with district needs, sector mandates, and national policies, while also developing action plans for implementation in Mangochi, Balaka, and Ntcheu districts.

Speaking during the opening of the workshop, Acting Director of Forestry, Mr. Teddie Kamoto commended the project for empowering local communities with alternative survival options beyond complete dependence on natural resources through green value chain enterprises. He urged participants to actively contribute to the development of strategic action plans to ensure smooth, effective, and realistic implementation of the Strategies.

Innovation Platforms launched in Ntcheu

Director of the Transforming Landscapes and Livelihoods Project (TLLP) in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Mining, Lonnie Chirambo, says the strength of an innovation platform lies in its membership, where a multi-stakeholder ecosystem is needed to position Malawi's forest and farm products within growing green markets- locally, nationally and regionally.

She said that clear market linkages between producer groups and reliable off-takers, as well as improved quality standards and aggregation systems, are some of the expectations from innovation platforms.

Chirambo told that the establishment of innovation platforms builds strong linkages among value chain actors, as well as strengthening governance and coordination.

She said there is a need to promote a sustainable, climate-resilient production system and support business growth and market access.
