Schooner Paquito

Schooner Paquito Home Base is Isla Mujeres A 69-foot custom steel schooner, Paquito was built in Cape Town, South Africa, by Paquito Marine Engineers.

She was started in 1981 and launched in 1987. The design was supposedly by Bruce Roberts but apparently does not match any of his designs. She is built of steel plates and frame. Her deck is teak laid over steel plating. She initially cruised between Cape Town and Venezuela and eventually settled in Trinidad, where the Fanjoys found her. They brought her to Annapolis for restoration in the spring

of 2002. By July 2004 she had sailed over 5000 miles*. In November 2011, the Remaniak's found her on Isla Mujeres, where she resides for the time being. Within the next month, they plan on sailing Paquito down to Old Providence, Colombia. The next leg is unknown for the moment.

Arrived in Bocas del Toro this morning in the rain after a very uneventful sail from Providencia, via Cayo Sude-Este (San Andres, COL.) As expected, winds and seas were calm. We motored into the harbor this morning, navigating our way through the channel carefully, as the bouys marked on our charts and GPS are nonexistant. Looks like we will have a good time here!

After losing track of time in Providencia, we are off to Bocas del Toro, Panama! We set sail early tomorrow morning; we expect calm winds out of the east and a pleasant sail. More updates to come from our next location! Chau, Providencia!

After four days at sea, Paquito has arrived in Old Providence where she is anchored in Catalina Bay. The passage from Isla began Tue. 3-12, 5pm as soon as work had been completed. We sailed out just ahead of some nasty weather which caught up to us later that night. The wind for the first few days was out of the Northwest at around 30kts. Swells were at least 10ft (sometimes more) and it rained consistently with squalls at night. It was a wet ride and our foul weather gear lived up to its name. Around 3am on the last day the stars finally came out with no moon and few clouds. On Saturday morning we were finally able to get all our sails up (we had been using only the jib and staysail, cruising at 6-10kts, occasionally under power). We arrived in Providencia Saturday afternoon with beautiful weather and calm seas. We have turned Paquito inside out in order to remove the sogginess and make everything shipshape again. Donald has since gone back to the states for a few weeks to take care of business. Crescent, Julia and Orion remain on board, snorkeling, spear fishing, scuba diving, hunting for coconuts and enjoying the warm sun!

After some careful consideration it was decided that Paquito would be hauled out for a hull cleaning and a bottom job .....

After some careful consideration it was decided that Paquito would be hauled out for a hull cleaning and a bottom job ... this turned into a complete exterior cleanup and paint-job.

Problems are getting solved so we can get underway! Crescent Remaniak and Dr. Jessie Werner are flying to Isla today from Florida with a new alternator, a starter coil for the dinghy's outboard motor, a new tachometer, and a new bilge pump. They're also bringing some dive equipment and coffee! All the essentials... Meanwhile, rust removal continues and we're still enjoying the beautiful weather here!
