Soil types plays key role in behavioral tendencies of pad footing. In loose clay soil the pad behaves like a cantilever beam and the maximum bending moment is witnessed at mid region where the the faces of column is pointed while the edges of the pad experience zero bending moment.

These increases chances of shear failure and settlement in clayey soil.
In a dense sand the load is assumed to be uniformly distributed over the pad footing.

Someone asked me why we had to take 3.3m loss on a project. As a contractor it's important to ensure contracts are detailed and transparent, specifying scope, deadlines, and payment terms and also prompt issue resolution.

During claims Quantity surveyors often focus heavily on the BOQ, but FIDIC suggests relying on higher-priority documents, such as specifications and drawings, when assessing variations or claims.

Clause 1.5 in the FIDIC form contract, defines document priority.

Priority of Documents in construction
Construction projects generate many documents, and prioritizing these helps reduce ambiguity. FIDIC contracts set this priority order to clarify which document should be referred to first in case of discrepancies.

The priority order includes:

Contract Agreement
Letter of Acceptance
Letter of Tender
Particular Conditions
General Conditions
Specifications
Drawings
Schedules and other documents
The bill of quantity is a secondary document.

So we have this mini estate project that we are managing. When we began Cement was 7,300 now it is 9,500.
1500 bags is needed To cast the RCC slab, with price deficit of 2,200 incured for each bag. it translated to 3.3m loss on cement material alone.
Fortunately for us non perishable materials was procured the moment contract was signed out.
In the contract agreement there was no clause for any variation, as this was a staggared lump sum contract. The QS too wasn't helping matters either. With the legal risk involved, the project couldn't be prosponed as this deliverable was tied to a timeframe that meant counting loses and moving on.
