Seeking Refuge in Allah from the Whispers of Shayṭān.
All praise is due to Allah, the Most High, the All-Knowing, the All-Hearing. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls and the plots of Shayṭān. Peace and blessings be upon our noble Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his companions, and all who follow his guidance until the Day of Judgment.
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Shayṭān, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
(Qur’an 41:36)
This verse comes after Allah commands the believers to repel evil with what is better—with patience, forgiveness, and good character. Allah knows that when a believer tries to respond with goodness, Shayṭān becomes active, provoking anger, revenge, pride, and harshness. Therefore, Allah immediately provides the remedy: seeking refuge in Him.
The whisper of Shayṭān may come as:
Anger when wronged
Pride when praised
Despair after a sin
Doubt during worship
Allah does not say fight Shayṭān, but says seek refuge in Allah, because only Allah has power over him.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ practically demonstrated this verse. It is reported that two men were arguing in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and one of them became extremely angry. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“I know a word which, if he were to say it, his anger would go away: A‘ūdhu billāhi min ash-shayṭān ir-rajīm.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
This shows that seeking refuge in Allah is not merely a statement, but a spiritual shield.
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
“Shayṭān flows through the son of Ādam like blood.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
Hence, constant vigilance and remembrance are required.
Allah says:
“Indeed, Shayṭān is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy.”
(Qur’an 35:6)
And He says:
“Indeed, he has no authority over those who believe and rely upon their Lord.”
(Qur’an 16:99)
These verses confirm that Shayṭān’s power is limited, and tawakkul (reliance on Allah) nullifies his influence.
Imam Ibn Kathīr (رحمه الله) said regarding this verse:
“This is a command from Allah to His servants that whenever Shayṭān attempts to turn them away from obedience, they should seek refuge in Allah.”
Imam al-Ghazālī (رحمه الله) said:
“The whisper is the beginning of sin, and seeking refuge is the beginning of safety.”
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (رحمه الله) said:
“No servant seeks refuge in Allah sincerely except that Allah protects him.”
Whispers are inevitable, but acting on them is a choice.
Seeking refuge must be immediate, especially during anger and temptation.
Allah is All-Hearing—He hears even the silent plea of the heart.
Allah is All-Knowing—He knows the whisper before it settles.
Brothers and Sisters, this single verse is a complete strategy for spiritual survival. Whenever you feel anger rising, desire overwhelming, or doubt creeping in, remember this divine instruction. Victory is not in overpowering Shayṭān by strength, but in running to Allah.
O Allah, we seek refuge in You from Shayṭān, his whispers, and his plots.
Protect our hearts from anger, pride, and disobedience.
Grant us remembrance that drives away evil suggestions.
Make us among those who rely upon You in every situation.
Forgive us, have mercy on us, and grant us peace of heart and steadfastness.
Ameen.
