Berlijnplein in progress.

In the detailed design phase, we presented a variety of facade materials and discussed them together with the Pleingenoten (the users of the site) Through co-creation, the character of the project is taking shape step by step, in dialogue, to reflect the identity of the Berlijnplein.

Last week, we celebrated the launch of the Jaarboek Nederlandse Architectuur 2025–2026, in which our project A11 Hembrug is included.

It was a pleasure to be part of the presentation evening, to see the book come together, and to see the many inspiring projects that are part of this edition.

With A11, this marks the fifth time bureau SLA has been featured in the Jaarboek Nederlandse Architectuur.

Thank you to , and to everyone involved.

With Architects with Attitudes, Peter van Assche and the ACT research group () explore how a regenerative approach can reshape architectural practice. Developed between 2019 and 2025 together with Gerjan Streng, Laura van Santen and Luuk Kramer, the research translates circular thinking into ten distinct attitudes for design.

In the video, Peter introduces The Thriftist: an attitude that shows how architecture can emerge from restraint, reuse and precision. Not by starting over, but by recognising the value of what is already there. Sometimes the most meaningful intervention is not demolition, but transformation.

Architects with Attitudes – Recipes for a Regenerative World will be published by NAi010 in September 2026.

We are happy to share 'Denken over Dingen', a beautiful publication by architectural historian Marieke Berkers about A11, the building where bureau SLA has its office.

The book explores the materiality of the project and the process through which it was realised, offering an intimate look at the making of the building. A careful and compelling reflection on architecture, craftsmanship, and transformation.

SLA revisited #3 - Armory fort Asperen

Some projects stay with us because their constraints made the idea sharper.
At Fort Asperen, expanding above ground was not an option. So instead of building out, we built down. Beneath a 170-year-old wooden armory, a new basement created the space the building needed, while the historic structure above remained largely untouched. Inside, a compact white volume introduced comfort, insulation and climate control without compromising the raw character of the monument. Even the timber removed during construction found a second life as tables and benches.

A major milestone for Berlijnplein: the preliminary design has been approved!

Together with the team, we designed a culture cluster where the buildings themselves help shape the identity of the place. Around three green public squares, a series of connected buildings will house spaces for theatre, dance, music, exhibitions, studios, hospitality and creativity.

At the heart of the design is the Drager, the unifying structure that connects the buildings and gives the ensemble its architectural character. It is both a spatial framework and a public element, creating coherence, expression and room for biodiversity.

What makes this project especially meaningful is the way it was developed: through intensive co-creation with the Pleingenoten, the future users of the site. Their ambitions, knowledge and daily practice have been part of the design from the start.

Excited to continue into the next phase.

Mock-up moment: from duct to façade

For Wooncoöperatie De Bonte Hulst, we’re giving reused ventilation ducts a second life as façade material. We’ve already built a mock-up to test the look, detailing, and texture up close. Circular choices, made tangible.

A major milestone for Wooncoöp De BinnenHaven Almere in Almere.

The city council has approved the development plan for Stadswerfpark, bringing this housing cooperative one big step closer to reality. Since 2017, this project has grown from an idea into a plan for around 100 sustainable, permanently affordable homes shaped together with future residents.

We are proud to be part of this journey and excited for the next design phase.
