Most cabinet lighting means booking a sparky. This system doesn't.

It's a low-voltage plug-and-play setup — the joiner installs it as part of the build, no separate electrician for the lighting itself. But the real difference, per Braden (Häfele Home NZ) is the switching: hidden capacitive switches behind panels, motion sensors, modular controls. The light just appears where you want it, no visible switch ruining the line.

Started in kitchens here in NZ. Now it's moving into wardrobes, bathrooms and laundries.

Here's the honest comparison:

Engineered stone (Caesarstone, UniQuartz): non-porous, scratch-resistant, genuine long-term durability. Cost range: $450–$900 per linear metre installed. Looks premium, performs premium.

Laminate benchtop: dramatically more affordable at $80–$180 per linear metre. Has improved significantly in recent years — modern laminate is not what it was in the 80s. Best for rental properties or budget-conscious renovations.

Our take: if you're keeping the house for 10+ years and cooking regularly, engineered stone pays for itself. If you're renovating to sell or working with a tight budget, good-quality laminate does an honest job.

A kitchen with the wrong material combination doesn’t look bad. It looks fine. It just never quite settles.

You walk in and the kitchen photographs well. The benchtop is right. The cabinetry is right. The hardware is right. But the room doesn’t have the quiet you’d expect when each piece is good. Something in the combination is unsettled — and unless you know what to look for, the unease is hard to name.

The mistake is almost always at the joins. Two stones that don’t share an undertone. A timber that’s a quarter-shade off the floor. A black hardware that reads cool against a warm wall. Each material chosen well in isolation, none of them chosen for each other.

We work through this on every project before any quote is signed. The sample lay-up is on the bench. The benchtop is held against the cabinetry. The hardware is tested in the actual light the kitchen will sit in — north-facing in winter is a different beast to south-facing in summer, and an Auckland kitchen with bifolds opening to a deck reads differently again. We move things around until the room stops mumbling.

Some combinations sing immediately. Pale oak and warm honed stone. Walnut and brass. Matte black and warm timber. Others fight quietly forever — cool stone with warm oak, stainless against a warm wall, brushed nickel against brass.

The point isn’t to follow a formula. It’s to let the materials hold a conversation, and to listen carefully when they do.

Anna Sepetavc changed her kitchen design — multiple times. We made it work every time.

Most renovation companies charge for every change. Or they push back. Or they give you a version that's close to what you asked for rather than exactly what you asked for.

Renovating a kitchen in an Auckland apartment isn't the same project as renovating one in a house. The constraints are genuinely different — and the mistakes cost more.

Body corporate rules. Lift access for deliveries. Working hours restrictions. Noise thresholds. Neighbours who share your walls and your ceiling. None of that applies in a standalone house. All of it applies to you.

Cabinet lighting is one of the most under-specified parts of a new kitchen. Worth knowing how it actually works.

Häfele Home NZ Loox5 is a modular LED system — strip lighting, spots, motion sensors, and drivers that all work together. Adjustable colour temperature (warm to cool), dimmable, and Häfele's cut-to-size service means each strip arrives the exact length needed for the cabinet.

Where it works: under-cabinet task lighting, in-drawer accent lighting, pantry sensor lighting, plinth mood lighting. Genuinely changes how a kitchen feels after dark.

What to know: cabinet lighting needs to be planned at the cabinetry design stage, not added later. The cable chase needs to run inside the cabinet, the driver needs a dedicated location (and it generates a small amount of heat), and dimmers need correct sizing for the load. Retrofitting after install means surface-mounted cabling.

Tends to suit: most kitchens — the spend is small relative to the daily impact. Worth specifying even on tight budgets.

That bang when a drawer shuts? That's a hardware choice.

You know the one — the plate slides forward, the drawer hits the carcass, everything inside rattles. It doesn't have to happen.

Soft close runners and hinges catch the drawer before it slams. Quiet, controlled, every time. Cameron (Stefano Orlati) put it best: a customer once asked him for a non-soft-close hinge, and his honest reaction was — why would you do that to yourself?

That's why every drawer we build runs soft close as standard. There's no good argument for the alternative.

The Auckland villa is older than your grandparents and probably has more original character than your kitchen does.

Most villas in Mt Eden, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, Westmere were built between 1900 and 1925. Native timber floors. Three-metre studs. Bay windows where the original kitchen used to back onto a coal range and a scullery. The proportions are generous, the detail is specific, and a lot of the original detailing is still in the bones of the house even when the surface has been painted over.

A new kitchen in a villa isn’t a kitchen project. It’s a renovation that has to hold a conversation with a house that was finished a hundred years before you bought it.

That’s a discipline. It means the cabinetry can’t pretend the original ceiling rose isn’t there. The proportions of the island can’t ignore the proportions of the surrounding rooms. The materials have to sit alongside kauri or rimu without arguing with them. The hardware can’t introduce a third era.

We’ve worked on enough villa kitchens to know that the failures are usually one of two things. Either the new kitchen treats the villa as a problem to be hidden — full bulkheads, suspended ceilings, anything to flatten the space. Or it goes the other way and tries to imitate 1910 — fake panelling, sentimental detailing, a kitchen pretending to be older than it is.

The third option is the right one. Modern joinery, restrained, that lets the original detail keep speaking.
