Epsom Unit Transformation ✨
For this Epsom front yard garden, we transformed an exposed street-front lawn into a private native sanctuary. By bringing the West Auckland bush to the city, we created a space reminiscent of our clients’ previous home - designed specifically for low-maintenance living and easy accessibility in their later years.
Layered native planting provides a lush, natural screen from the street. While hardwood boardwalks offer wide, level access from the gate and car to the front door, tying the 1980s brickwork together with rustic greens and browns. The result is maximum privacy and easy level access within a native sanctuary.

A balancing of form meets function. With this home and courtyard garden situated below street level, it was a balancing act to provide tall secure privacy while simultaneously elevating the road-side appeal. The new, classic shiplap fence, in moody grey-black, became a key structural canvas for the design. With layered garden beds replacing a previous dull strip of lawn. The contrast of the dark fence against the seasonal lilac of the large Jacaranda and the simple, effective greenery combination of Ligularia and Liriope makes for a stunning streetscape.

Six months on from completion, this inner city garden in Auckland is thriving. The transformation from a tired, under-utilised space to a serene haven is complete.

Contemporary concrete steps create a second entryway to the home and garden, complementing the modern architecture. While the use of crazy pave and pebble pathways invite traipsing and lends a rustic, welcoming vibe to the space.

Blending native New Zealand planting with hints of Japanese design aesthetic makes for an eclectic and inviting space.

The design brief for this roadside garden emphasised vibrant colour and personality, a stark contrast to the formal tones of the rest of the garden. The plant palette incorporates bold colour, varied shape and texture to provide a playful yet striking contrast to the geometric lines of the house. The curved brick path in a herringbone pattern complements the warm tones of the home, also softening its dominant form. The result is a head-turning garden that enhances the property's street appeal, commanding attention from passersby.
