Super sunny days but killer cold nights, Frost number 2 this morning and 3 more cold ones expected in the next 3 days here in our Karapiro orchard.
Feeling good about the benefits of our tree protectors as right now the macadamia trees are sending out lots of new growth… crazy to see!!

Minus 1 frost last night with all the young trees snug as ……and on the trees that flowered last spring the nuts are growing beautifully!

Flash back..... It was just a year ago that Gillian put Vitalitree Tree Protection
shelters around her newly planted avocados, lucky too as when Cyclone Dovi hit in Feb 22 they got hit with gale force winds

Fast Forward.... Today the trees have grown so much that the shelters can be lowered so that the branches can now spread even further and harden up nicely over the hotter months
By keeping the lowered shelters around the trees for a few more months will be a great peace of mind as who knows what our NZ summer will bring! Just a quick unclip, hitch and pin and the shelter will be back in force.

Bit windy at ours today....
Just planted a couple of lovely kowhai and pohutakawa and to protect them from the wind Paul has popped a vitalitree open top shelter around each tree. The bigger Kowhai has a VT 1000 mm diameter while the smaller trees have VT 800 mm diameter shelters. All the shelters are 1.8 metres tall and the the Y posts are installed so the bottom ring of shelter is at ground level... no rabbits or hares allowed Native trees grow better with good protection!

Lambs are enjoying the sweet grass around the young trees since we lowered the vitalitree shelters by popping the quick release clips down a couple of holes on the Y posts and then tightening the cord around the stem to prevent the sheep from nibbling at the bottom leaves. Works brilliantly! www.vitalitree.co.nz

Spring surprise for us to see this fragrant raceme hanging on a macadamia not yet 2 yrs in the ground. Experts tell us we have to strip it off to allow the tree to have maximum growth however so so hard to do.....😃
By dropping the VT - 800 shelters around our macadamias we are exposing the trees to the warmer spring weather, Paul now has the hood cinched in neatly around the trunk and providing stability to the bottom of the tree. Shelter is still around the tree in case we have a sneaky late snap!
