Future goal is to give the tree more of a lolly pop look, but for now the sacrificial branches help heal the big wounds, I'm not quite happy with the antenna on the top, but the apex will fill out in time, thats for sure. Primary and secondaries are set so far. If I have success to graft branches onto my crash test dummy Hawthorne, I will do the same with this one, more branches, more branches, more branches. For now my hands are bleeding. ☺️

What a strange Winter, but so enjoyable. No rain in month, warmest day on record, but finally and just in time the rain is setting in, and just about in time for collecting trees ☺️

Alnus Cordata, Italian Alder. Winter wire '26
One bit older tree, around 20 years as a bonsai.
I inherited it from Julie last year.
First step was repotting, since it is been hammered with fertiliser throughout last season, the branches had slightly escaped with strong leaves at the ends but getting more barren interior.
I shortened the branches massively during last season in 3 stages, I also shifted the apex from one side to the other, I respect to always stimulate interior buds first, before taking the length back.
One site shows stronger branches in the apex, even its lower, thats the old apex, I've just pruned to sit below, the side with the thinner branches now aiming, for the tree to fill out, now being able to allocate more resources towards this area. I will let this weaker side, the new apex escape, while I keep the stronger side intensely pruned, during next season.
The branches seem very flat atm, as I just triggered new buds to emerge and fill out next few years, generally Alder is super phototropic and every new growth on the tree, has an upwards momentum.
Here we go, ready for next season. πŸͺ΄πŸ€—πŸ’š

I so admire his work. True genius.

Approach graft vs thread graft, what works best for you?
