Licensed Building Practitioner providing Architectural Draughting and Design Services in North Canterbury for New Homes and Alterations, Repairs and Renovations. A well designed home should provide comfort, aesthetic appeal, and structural integrity. I am an architectural designer based in Kaikoura, North Canterbury. I provide architectural design services for unique new homes, additions, alterat

ions and repairs. Since joining the architectural design industry in 1992, I have enjoyed working on a huge number of new builds and design projects, and have many satisfied customers throughout North Canterbury and beyond. As well as many transformations of existing houses from dysfunctional to fabulous, my design experience includes new family homes, townhouses, earth block houses, farm homesteads and sheds, motels, studios, aircraft hangars, and even a luxury treehouse which featured on Grand Designs! I am a Licensed Building Practitioner with a Design 2 License, and established my own design company Architectural Draughting & Design Ltd in 2004. Through my membership to Architectural Designers NZ (ADNZ), I regularly attend professional development training and keep up to date with the latest innovations in the building industry. When it comes to any building proposal, my client’s needs are my top priority. I listen to your ideas, needs and dreams, and then use my knowledge and innovative flair to evolve concepts into buildable reality. I have a strong focus on sustainability in construction, energy efficiency, and designing comfortable, healthy, and adaptable homes, while working within my clients' budgets. Now is a very exciting time to build, with initiatives such as the Superhome Movement, Homestar, and Passive House inspiring the creation of homes that are not only warm and dry year-round; they are also ultra energy-efficient, durable, and significantly cheaper to run for the long-term. After every initial client consultation I give a brief and no-obligation fee proposal, and explain the stages of the architectural process. Costs vary according to the complexity and nature of the proposed work. All of my designs are modelled using the latest 3D architectural modelling program, so that at every stage you can easily visualise your dream home coming to life. Thinking of building your dream home or have an exciting building project in mind? I’d love to hear from you.

The creative process was a joy for this recently completed design project in Hanmer Springs. The house is now under construction in the care of Amuri Building Specialists ltd. I look forwards to seeing the idea become reality. This project features in this month's Business South Magazine.

Today I had a lovely visit with Kahurangi to see the newly completed Te Puna Reo o Te Ahi Kaikoura a Tama ki te Rangi at Hapuku. This was such a happy project. A transformation of the old library into a fun, relaxed and accessible learning environment. The result is a wonderful facility providing Maori language pre-school education. Congratulations to Kahurangi and Patricia on their vision and hard work to make it happen Whakamihi.

Three years ago I posted on this page urging people who are building to include interconnected smoke alarms rather than the minimum building code requirement of single battery-operated smoke detectors within 3m of a sleeping space. I am relieved to see some progress on this issue. From November 2023 MBIE is phasing in a requirement for interconnected smoke alarms for new household units. This is a good but small step forwards for fire safety. Smoke alarms save lives. Interconnnected smoke alarms will save even more lives.

Construction of my first Māori language Early Childhood Education Centre has begun at Hapuku School. I did the design work for this conversion of the school library building. It has been a wonderful journey with Kahurangi during the planning phase and I'm excited to see the building taking shape.

I am excited to share this recently completed alpine home. This was a thoroughly enjoyable project for wonderful repeat clients. The home looks amazing and has many hidden features such as in-slab heating powered by solar panels. The fully insulated floor slab radiates heat keeping this home super cosy throughout winter.
This smart house can be managed remotely and kept secure using smart technology from Go Wireless NZ.

Thanks to Dan McGuire and the team at Amuri Building Specialists ltd on another beautifully crafted project and to the owners on their exquisite taste in finishes and furnishings. Images by Jamie Armstrong Photography

Here’s another recently completed alpine holiday home by Sally Turnbull Architecture.
The owners wanted a comfortable low-maintenance future-proofed holiday home to which they could eventually retire. The elevated site has stunning vistas and overlooks the ever-changing colours of a plantation of mature oaks.
The stone cladding anchors the home and references the alpine setting while providing privacy and shelter to front door.
The lower floor consists of garaging, laundry, bathroom and access to the services area for heat pumps, gas equipment and a rainwater harvesting tank.
From the entry, stairs and a hydraulic lift access the upper level which consists of bedrooms, bathrooms, and open-plan living rooms to the north which flow through to the private outdoor living areas.
Sustainability features include insulation well above building code to minimise energy demand throughout the year and water harvesting to reduce the demand on town water supply and provide resilience.
