I never tire of making cushions, they are such a wonderful way to add personality and colour into your interior and I’m proud to be a maker producing a beautiful product using quality materials. 🪡

I get so much satisfaction from the process; discovering amazing fabrics, choosing which colours to trim and back them with and then there’s the joy of constructing them - using my own hands, taking my time, appreciating the end result before sending them out into the world.

Watch as I make a Magical Ming Dragon cushion… a fabulous fabric designed for Schumacher by fashion designer Johnson Hartig, the creative force behind Libertine — a fashion label celebrated for its brilliant colours, wild patterns and unapologetic flamboyance.

Lucky dragons, vibrant colours, stylised details - so much personality. I couldn’t wait to select the other elements and get cracking making it!

Magical Ming Dragon is part of a collection designed for Schumacher by fashion designer Johnson Hartig, the creative force behind Libertine — a label celebrated for its brilliant colours, wild patterns and unapologetic flamboyance.

Stay tuned to see this cushion come to life!

Fringe, fringe, fabulous fringe! ✨

I’ve been having such fun working with these gorgeous trims lately. There are so many delicious colours to choose from, all crafted with the most luxurious, luminous threads.

My favourite part? Pulling away the binding threads after sewing and giving the fringe a little fluff with my fingertips… so satisfying!

As part of my custom cushion service, you have access to all these beautiful finishes and more. Whether you’re wanting to create something from a fabric you already own, or explore my collection of vintage, luxury, collectible and repurposed textiles, I’m certain we’ll find something you'll fall in love with 💛

I am completely enchanted by Castle’s Garden from ’s new Transylvanian Rhapsody collection ✨

This storytelling wallpaper gently captures scenes of another era, with delicate figures hunting, fishing and horseback riding amongst blossom-like greenery. There’s something so romantic and transportive about it, like stepping into a dream of times gone by.

I love wallpapers like this that reveal more the longer you look at them, full of intricate little details and quiet moments woven amongst the pattern.

I soon have the sample book from this collection available to browse in-store if you’d like to explore a little of Mind The Gap’s pattern magic for yourself 💛

Did you know I offer an upholstery service?

Steve, my highly skilled upholsterer, has more than four decades of experience. Learning under the careful and exacting guidance of master upholsterers in England, his early training shaped the craftsmanship, precision and respect for traditional methods that remain at the heart of his work today.

So, if you are looking to recover existing pieces, want something special created from scratch, need a simple window seat squab (or anything in between) please get in touch!

With access to a wonderful range of fabrics including those suitable for outdoor furniture and sunny indoor spots, I can guide you on fabric specification and supply.

Pictured is the incredible 'Alma' from ’s new collection of fabrics. How funky is that?!

A large slice of the joy of running a successful retail business is that it’s mine – every part of it, all the time – it’s an expression of who I am and how I want the world to see me.

I am so grateful to have been able to create a space in my life where I can truly express myself and make things I love that others also love – it’s a real pinch me moment when I allow myself the time to think about it!

Over the past 15 months since opening I have poured every ounce of energy and time I have into my little shop, and I have been able to enjoy the process of taking an idea and moulding it into a business that is holding its own in these challenging economic times.

I was convinced that I needed to have the door open six days a week to never miss a sale, but what I have observed, and what my customers have taught me is, that for my business the importance of the shopping experience far out-weighs the number of hours I am open.

I have also learnt that I need a regular two-day weekend in my life if I am going to be at my best for my customers and my family – so I have made the decision to close The Cushion Couturier on Sundays and Mondays as of 8 June.

My new hours will be Tuesday – Friday, 10am–5pm and Saturday, 10am–2pm.
I am also available for consultations by appointment.

I look forward to seeing you in store!

This range of hard-wearing, Persian-inspired velvets I brought into the shop recently has been a hit with my gorgeous customers ✨

Just about every time I finish sewing one of these beauties, it wanders straight out the door to brighten another lovely home. It's no surprise they're popular - Persian patterns have adorned homes and palaces for centuries; such a versatile style to bridge the gap between modern and traditional interiors!

Available in several different colour palettes, you can explore the collection here: beckylee.co.nz/collections/velvet-cushions.... or search Persia, Tabriz or Shiraz on my website to see the various colour ways in the 3 different designs. All perfect for mixing and matching.

Hello to you all and if you’re new around here - welcome! Now’s as good a time as any to catch you up on my business journey to date and share a few pics of the store’s evolution and a wee glimpse into home!

Let me introduce myself; I’m Becky Lee, the owner and operator of The Cushion Couturier boutique and workroom in Christchurch NZ.

I live with my husband Phil and my two teenage sons in a 1950’s bungalow. My best friend Kate bought the house next door 18 months ago – we put a gate in the fence immediately and refer to our combined properties as the Weston Road Pā. To complete the picture there’s Willow, the “pā dog” who moves freely between the two households seeking the tastiest treats on offer. If you ever get the chance to live like this - I can highly recommend it.

Post-divorce about 13 years ago I hit the life reset button. Originally, I qualified and practised as a Naturopath, then slipped into event management, before my heart demanded I scratch a creative itch and steered me into the interiors industry.

I worked in an entry level role, got to know the industry, re-trained and then took the first leap and started my interior design consultancy in 2017. Eventually I had to acknowledge that I wasn’t getting the creative satisfaction I had hoped for out of the work; so to help fill that void I re-connected with my lifelong love of making and started sewing cushions.

An idea started glimmering away in the back of my mind, about a place where I could put all my skills and experience to use and work every day with my true passions - textiles and colour. And so, The Cushion Couturier was conceived.

The Cushion Couturier is a special little place; it’s been described as an Alladins Cave, a treasure trove, a visual symphony, a colour bomb and recently a lovely woman said that she felt like she had stepped through a mystic portal into another land!

This all feels very meaningful because the move into retail 15 months ago was a massive leap into the unknown, but like many big life decisions there’s never a perfect moment, sometimes you have to trust your instincts and just go for it!

Thanks for following along!

Love Becky 🌸
