I was recently in a houseware big box store and noticed these woolen bed underlay blankets. I had forgotten that many homes in NZ need these for the occupants to feel comfortable while sleeping.

These are unnecessary, when living in an energy efficient, high performance home, you don't need Summer and Winter Duvets or Summer and Winter PJ's, it's the same temperature year round.

The other day I was reminded that the construction industry has a long way to go in understanding thermal bridging in timber framing. I was at a client's build site, he is project managing, and we were talking about the ridged air barrier going on soon, so I mentioned that before he does that he needs to fill the three stud corners with insulation or foam to reduce thermal bridging. Yesterday he phoned me to tell me that when he told the builders to insulate the corners before putting on the RAB, they laughed at him. 'No need for that!'. Now these guys have clearly been building for a few years, so their understanding of the importance of detailing in the building envelope is still lacking. Thanks to BRANZ for the images.

Today in Stuff there is an article about the age old discussion of, whether to leave your heat pump on continuously, or not. And surprise, surprise, don't leave it on all the time unless your house is 'insulated above code' and 'airtight'. It's the equivalent of leaving your fridge door open all the time and expecting it to still keep your food cool.
