How I Make Bonsai Pots in New Zealand I’m Fionna Burgess and I make unique quality hand crafted bonsai pots in New Zealand. fionnasbonsaipots.com

I couldnt buy any bonsai pots for my trees, so I decided to learn how to make my own. There were lots of disasters, disappointments and moments of pure joy as I opened the kiln. Now that most of the problems have been solved I can enjoy creating bonsai pots of all styles colours and looks. Apart from learning the basics off a local club member, everything else has been self taught. There are very

few bonsai potters who understand the ins and outs of making a bonsai pot who are willing to share there knowledge in New Zealand, thank goodness for the internet!

Slip potted three of my trees this afternoon. Most happy with a tree that was worked on at a Steven Yin workshop a few weekends ago in Dunedin. Branch placement got a bit smooshed around in the back of the hatchback coming home, but it’ll recover.
The other pine had struggled over summer/autumn in a shallow pot, branches also a bit higgledepigildee, so it’ll be happier in this oversized (60cm) one also. The wires will be removed tomorrow, it can go commando for a while to get its strength back.😂

Yes, I know it’s too early to repot. Technically a slip repot. This Douglas Fir struggles all summer with lack of water and too small/shallow pot to keep it healthy. Now I’ve got a few of these large schist style pots, it will be happier. Better to have an oversized bonsai pot that keeps a tree healthy, than a shallow small pot that just barely keeps a tree alive. Not worried if it puts on heaps of growth as a result, better healthy than dead. Might even get round to styling and wiring it at the right time. Finished slip pot to come. fionnasbonsaipots.com

Spending some time looking at a few newly made bonsai pots. Some just catch your attention…they have that little X factor where you can’t stop touching/looking and feeling them. This little drum mame is one of them. fionnasbonsaipots.com

Waiting…waiting….waiting! Spend half my life waiting on one thing or another. This time it’s the bisque firing of the kiln (1000 degrees Celsius). Every half hour from now on I’ll nip out to the garage and check through the peephole to see if the first cone has started to drop. It’s an old fashioned setup - no temperature controller, no temp display etc. Just good old checking with your eyeballs. But yes I do use hubbys welding helmet often as it gets pretty bright, eyeballs aren’t easily replaced. Hopefully another couple of hours and it’ll be up to temp and I’ll be done for the night. fionnasbonsaipots.com
