Expression of Interest - Northland College conversion to Charter School
Tēnā koutou e te whānau,
The Northland College Board of Trustees has joined with Te Rūnanga A Iwi o Ngāpuhi (TRAION) to make a formal expression of interest in converting to a Charter School.
Once our expression of interest is confirmed by The Charter School Agency we will begin formal consultation with you, our whānau and wider community. Only after consultation is completed will a final decision be made as to whether or not an application to convert be made.
As a Board our conversation and investigation into Charter School conversion started over 12 months ago. As our consideration and conversation progressed, we were able to meet with representatives of The Charter School Agency, and earlier this year we shared our thinking with TRAION. TRAION's role is as a sponsor for this conversion. The Charter School Agency's website has useful information for converting schools and their communities.
Ultimately, we are investigating what we believe could be an opportunity to address key challenges in terms of attendance, achievement and retention of students. It is our view that Charter School conversion offers greater flexibility in terms of curriculum delivered and experts who we are able to employ. Furthermore, it is an opportunity for the College to partner with key iwi agencies to support our learning community.
You can hear more about this in a story run by Radio New Zealand this morning (8 September).
Kia ora anō e te whānau,
