What is wrong with chemical edging??
Chemical edging works, but it’s not a method we use or recommend.
1. It kills roots unevenly
Herbicide doesn’t stop neatly at the edge. Grass roots run sideways, so you end up with:
➡️ Patchy dead grass
➡️ Weak, thinning edges
➡️ That scruffy brown strip you can already see forming
2. It erodes the edge
Once the grass dies, nothing is holding the soil together.
Wind + rain + foot traffic =
➡️ soil washing away
➡️ edge sinking lower than the lawn
➡️ stones becoming exposed and unstable (like yours on the left)
3. W**ds come back worse
Bare soil is an open invitation. You’ll usually get:
➡️Dandelion
➡️Plantain
➡️Clover
They love disturbed, chemical-killed edges.
4. It stains and damages hardscape
Overspray can:
➡️Discolour rocks
➡️Kill plants in the mulch bed
➡️Drift onto the lawn and leave ghost patches
5. It’s a repeat-cost trap
Chemical edging:
➡️Needs redoing every few weeks
➡️Gets wider and uglier over time
➡️Never gives a crisp line like mechanical edging
