Jack’s House
Winner: Small Home of the Year 2026 — by HOME

We’re incredibly grateful that Jack’s House was awarded Small Home of the Year 2026 last night.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this project, in particular, the clients Jack, Toby, & George Turner, the builders at BBM Construction, and the HOME team and judges.

We're honoured & stoked for 'Jack's House' to be shortlisted for a Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture award.

We’ve appreciated the submission criteria, particularly their focus on sustainability, including carbon emissions and thermal and energy modelling. It’s a really encouraging sign for the future of architecture in Aotearoa.

Stoked to win our first Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects local award last night. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project, especially the clients!

Jury Citation:

“Utilising a set of carefully considered key strategies within an extremely tight budget and site, the Architect has elevated a banal typology to create a balanced, sculptural form - a beacon of hope amongst a sea of beige. This four-bedroom house directly addresses the ever-increasing need for low-cost quality family homes and shows the value that architects bring throughout the whole process of design and construction to deliver a quality outcome to the mainstream.”

Family heritage and memories are at the heart of this renovation project.

Transforming a family home that has stood for over 60 years, we’ve carefully designed it for the next generation. Our focus has been on adding space and improving building performance and accessibility, all while preserving the original architectural character and heritage.

We believe in the power of retaining and renovating quality existing buildings. Not only is this a more sustainable choice for our environment, but it also honors priceless qualities like family heritage and memories that money simply can't buy

New art studio. While we often paint a picture of how we envision spaces, we sometimes like to leave the space open for imagination. In reality, the space will be constantly evolving with people, furniture, art, objects, and dust.

We are pleased to share our recently completed project, “So Fresh, So Clean”

A new home on a very modest budget - our approach was to embrace Leonardo Da Vinci's quote “ simplicity the ultimate sophistication”. We focused on designing the fundamentals well, and worked hard to create a clean and balanced sculptural form. By limiting construction complexity, we could reallocate the budget to more high-end features and details, to lift the overall architectural experience.

These included the invisible flush garage door to express the clean sculptural form, the front door cedar soffit which extends into the entry foyer to welcome you into the home, a highly crafted timber stair screen as an artistic centerpiece connecting the downstairs and upstair spaces, and a level floor transition for a more seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor living space (perfecting for kids scootering around the house).

Sustainability here is in rainwater collection, durable low maintenance materials, and less is lower carbon.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project, especially the client's who put in a massive effort all the way through.

The client's brief was to design a glasshouse to serve as an extension of their new house on an organic farm, for an elevated all year round dining experience.
