If you haven't been down to the stream in a while, you're in for a treat! Bart and his team have finished the boardwalk extension, and it really is an impressive addition to the existing boardwalk/tracks. Many thanks to Bart and his team for the countless backbreaking hours they've put into building this for the community. Thank you to our sponsors: Kowhai Roofing Wellington City & Toa ITM. Thank you to all of our donors, and members of the community who made this project possible. We are so grateful to have such support in improving and maintaining this wee slice of paradise 💚

📢📢 WORKING BEE 🐝🐝

Saturday 9 May: 9am meeting at the concrete bridge.

This working bee will focus on spreading gravel onto our tracks to help with the muddy/soggy tracks. We will travel up towards the Hutt river trail both sides starting from the Concrete bridge and back towards the ford as time and volunteer labour allows.

This needs a whole community to move the Gravel in place so please reach out to friends, families and known users of the Mawaihakona Stream trails and ask for assistance where possible.

WHAT TO BRING:

Heavy Wheel barrows, shovels, rakes gloves etc. We hope to borrow some mechanised wheelbarrows from GWRC.
If anyone has contacts for useful equipment please reach out to them to borrow for use as well.

We plan to borrow the key for the gate at County Lane to allow mechanised equipment access up the river trail and onto the tracks.

Please message us if you are keen to help so we can get a rough idea of numbers for morning tea.

Thanks in advance, the friends of the Mawaihakona Stream 💚

📢📢 An update on the works happening on the adjacent paddocks from one of our wonderful volunteers, Kevin.

Heavy Machinery will be working on the Northern area of the paddocks from Monday 23 March. Public access to these fields will cease while work is in progress, and closing off of the area began today.

Please look after your doggies while walking them outer and back tracks, as well as the paddocks closest to Heretaunga Park over the next few months.

📢 Putting the call out for any builders or retired builders floating around who could help volunteer some time to help us with our new board walk. This would involve bringing your own tools and laying some decking. Our current volunteers have a few physical limitations and are chipping away as they can, but any help would be appreciated. Get in touch if you would like to help 💚

Kia ora everyone 👋

You may have noticed parts of the track have been temporarily fenced off near the County Lane end. This is Stage 2 of the planned earth moving works for the development next door (who are the land owners).

They have taken the health and safety measures they deemed necessary and we ask that you abide by these. We have had a few instances where the fence has been torn down with people walking through and we would hate for any accidents to happen as this may affect our use of the land.

The team will be working as fast as they can but estimate the work could go through to April next year. There may be more significant closures next year as the project progresses but we will keep you updated with any happenings.

Although the situation isn't ideal, the team next door are great and are doing their best to get it done. Please let us know if you have any questions and we'll do our best to answer them.

🚴‍♂️ ATTENTION ALL CYCLISTS 🚴‍♀️

OUR TRACKS ARE DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE, NOT PEDALS.

Over many years local volunteers have worked hard creating pathways alongside the Mawaihakona Stream. Cyclists riding the track can cause damage to the surface layers of bark and land beneath the pathways, and to overhanging vegetation. This means more work for our volunteers.

More importantly, it is a safety issue. There have been incidents of walkers having to take evasive action - on paths that are narrow and in places have steep drops. Many of the walkers are elderly and cannot be expected to hear or see approaching cyclists - especially from behind.

Should there be an incident causing injury or complaint, there is a real possibility that the landowners may prohibit all access - thereby putting at risk many years of hard work by dedicated volunteers.

CYCLISTS ….please respect the area as it is intended. Stay on the River Trail : the Stream Pathways are getting people and dogs away from the River Trail, giving you greater freedom to enjoy your cycling. This goes for our tamariki (children) on bikes too.

Please help by passing the word to others.

It has brought to our attention that there have been people fishing for eels in the last week, which is a big no no. We have pou rahui at both ends of the stream, to mark our sacred area a no take/no harm zone. The eels are fascinating we must agree, however we ask that aside from feeding them - they are left alone. We really don't want to have to put signs up so if you do spot this happening, please send us a message and let us know 🌿

Wishing everybody a relaxing and restful Christmas break 🎄
A big thank you to all of the volunteers that have helped us this year to maintain the tracks, beat back the weeds and for pitching in with the endless jobs that crop up. We couldn't do it without our community and are grateful for all the help.
Remember to be mindful of others at the stream and to keep control of your dogs.
Ngā mihi, Bart & the team 🌿
