Is AI About to Kill 3D Visualisation Careers?
Last week at the New Zealand Planning Institute conference left me with a question I cannot ignore.
Are we watching an entire profession shift in real time?
Not long ago, many of us were learning tools like 3ds Max, V-Ray, and Corona, trying to master photorealistic rendering. It was a craft. A career. A competitive edge.
In my architecture cohort, around half of the students ended up in visualisation roles across architecture, urban design, and even gaming.
Now AI tools like Nano Banana are generating realistic buildings and entire towns in minutes.
Yes, it is not perfect yet. Sometimes inconsistent. Sometimes a bit off.
But those are temporary problems.
So what happens when:
Rendering is instant
Iterations take seconds
Anyone can visualise ideas without technical skills
Do we lose a profession, or does it evolve?
Maybe the future visualiser is not the person who knows every render setting,
but the one who understands design, storytelling, and how to direct AI.
For planners, councils, and consent processes, this could be massive.
Imagine real-time visualisation of developments, zoning, or policy changes.
Faster decisions.
Better communication.
More transparency.
So maybe the real question is not:
Will AI replace visualisers?
But:
What will visualisers become next?
What do you think?
