Client: “Can you give a quick suggestion?”
Me: “Sure!” 😊

…45 minutes later explaining flow, scale, furniture layout, natural light, structural limits, and why that wall absolutely cannot move…

Also me: “I’ll include that in the invoice.” 😌

Because in architecture, “quick” = concept, strategy, 7.5 years of education AND 10 years of experience—compressed into one conversation

Good design solves problems before they appear.

Because once something is built,
it’s much harder, more costly to change.

Is AI About to Kill 3D Visualisation Careers?

Last week at the New Zealand Planning Institute conference left me with a question I cannot ignore.

Are we watching an entire profession shift in real time?

Not long ago, many of us were learning tools like 3ds Max, V-Ray, and Corona, trying to master photorealistic rendering. It was a craft. A career. A competitive edge.

In my architecture cohort, around half of the students ended up in visualisation roles across architecture, urban design, and even gaming.

Now AI tools like Nano Banana are generating realistic buildings and entire towns in minutes.

Yes, it is not perfect yet. Sometimes inconsistent. Sometimes a bit off.

But those are temporary problems.

So what happens when:

Rendering is instant
Iterations take seconds
Anyone can visualise ideas without technical skills

Do we lose a profession, or does it evolve?

Maybe the future visualiser is not the person who knows every render setting,
but the one who understands design, storytelling, and how to direct AI.

For planners, councils, and consent processes, this could be massive.

Imagine real-time visualisation of developments, zoning, or policy changes.
Faster decisions.
Better communication.
More transparency.

So maybe the real question is not:

Will AI replace visualisers?

But:

What will visualisers become next?

What do you think?

At the NZPI Annual Conference in Wellington today 🇳🇿✨

Always inspiring to be surrounded by people shaping the future of our built environment. Looking forward to great conversations, fresh ideas, and bringing new insights back into The Floor Plan Edit.

If you’re here too, come say hi 👋

The entry sets the tone for how a house works.

Not just visually — but practically.

Storage at this point of the house isn’t an afterthought.
It supports everyday life quietly.

Shoes, bags, daily clutter — all considered from the start.

Good design solves problems before they appear.

On the way to the NZPI Conference 2026 ✈️

Flying over Coronet Peak and reminded how powerful great landscapes are in shaping how we plan, design, and live.

Looking forward to a few days of ideas, conversations, and inspiration — and bringing it all back into The Floor Plan Edit.

Movement through a house is rarely thought about —
until it’s not working.

The staircase isn’t just a connection between levels.
It defines how you experience the transition.

Light, proportion, and visibility all shape that moment.

Good design isn’t only about rooms.
It’s about how you move between them.

Design isn’t about controlling every outcome.

Construction always brings new questions and decisions.

Architecture continues throughout the building process.

Some might recognise the phrase.
And the poster.

But this is a remarkable place to live.

In this project, the master bedroom was positioned to capture the surrounding mountain views, allowing the landscape to become part of the everyday experience.

Designed to be seen from the right place.

Sometimes the biggest design changes
come from the smallest decisions.

A 200-millimetre adjustment.
A slightly different fixture size.
Or simply taking a second look at the drawings.

Good architecture isn’t always dramatic.

Often it’s just careful thinking.
