Wow!

I’ve been blown away by all the interest in my little cut flower seedling business.

I gave the customers on my email list a 3 hour head start on placing their orders, and we’d pretty much sold out by the time I went to post about it on Instagram!

We’ve had a busy day dispatching today, and have loaded up the last few punnets on the website.

Because we only dispatch rural and South Island orders on a Monday - we can’t ship to rural or South Island addresses this time sorry.

We’ll be back in July with our ranunculus - so make sure you’re signed up for the email list if you don’t want to miss that! 🌱

I love enabling people to grow their own cut flower patch.

What a joy it was to spend my Mother’s Day getting my own daughter started on her cut flower addiction in her first house.

She lives in the South Island so we could only take 6 punnets down with us on the plane, but it’s a good start.

Shes a busy working Mum so we stuck with some of the easiest plants that will cope without staking or netting.

She’ll enjoy picking her Iceland poppies in August, her ranunculus in September, and her ammobium and statice in October…

We planted them all approx 20cm apart in a diamond pattern. And we covered up the half of the bed we didn’t plants with cardboard to keep the weeds from growing.

It’s looking very likely that these 3 varieties will be ready for next weeks dispatch.

1. Ammobium (sometimes called winged everlasting)

2. Iceland poppies (my own sherbet collection)

3. Cress Green Dragon (super useful in a bunch)

They’re not on the website yet. We’re waiting to see who else is ready to join them! We have about 15 more varieties we’re hoping will be ready.

Thanks for all the questions. Yes we do courier these out of Auckland, although we prefer not to send to rural addresses because of the time taken for delivery.

We’ll keep you updated later in the week. Sign up to our email list for early notification

Autumn and early winter is a great time to plant a group of plants that we call ‘hardy annuals’. They don’t mind a bit of chill over winter, and will reward you with flowers a few weeks earlier than spring planted seedlings.

We’ve got a whole heap almost ready in our propagation house…just waiting for the roots to fill out enough. We’ll be checking each variety on Thursday and updating our website. Dispatch is planned for Monday 11th May

Get those garden beds cleared!

Ranunculus … the French and Italian cut-flower varieties … now that’s something you probably won’t be able to get at your local garden centre!

But they are absolutely delicious flowers, so we’re coming to the party to make it possible for you to add some to your cut flower patch.

We’re potting them up now…and we’ll be selling them in July when they’re nice and lush.

And the good news…these can be grown further south than our Auckland climate (in fact they prefer a cooler climate)

We’ll have them in all sorts of mainly pastel colours (pinks and lemons) with a few bright options!

One of my favourite things to do is pot up seedlings!

We’ve just picked up a huge stack of potting mix, and now we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us potting up our babies.

It’s a great job though…I get to listen to lots of interesting podcasts 🎧 (suggestions welcomed)

This week we’re potting up some spring beauties that we haven’t offered before…and they’re suitable for planting all over New Zealand…they grow well in pots too if you don’t have much space.

Keep following to find out what they are and how to get your hands on them 🌱

Growing a successful cut flower patch is all about choosing the right plant at the right time of year.

Flowers are naturally seasonal, and although the seasons can be manipulated by the big greenhouse growers with heat and lights, most home gardeners are growing outside, and have to grow within their specific climate.

Right now in our northern climate it’s getting too cold for the Summer Annuals, and it’s almost time to start planting the Hardy Annuals.

This group of plants can cope with cold temperatures over Winter, and will reward you with strong, productive plants in Spring. They are the first annuals to flower in Spring, and include flowers like larkspur, bells of Ireland, campanula, snapdragons, cornflowers, Iceland poppies, strawflowers and statice.

And here at MY PATCH our mission is to grow you beautiful healthy seedlings at the right time for planting in our Northern climate. Our propagation house is filling up with hardy annual seedlings, and we’ll have a batch ready for dispatch in the first few weeks of May.

P.S. now would be a good time to start clearing your flower patch 🌱

Firstly - I am not an expert at growing phlox!!! I haven’t grown it for about 5 years because I couldn’t work it out.

It is notoriously difficult to grow good long stems, while at the same time supporting them so they don’t flop everywhere! But if you’re growing as a cut flower, you usually want a long stem.

I thought I’d give it another go this year. Everything I’ve seen online says plant it close together and pinch it hard…so that’s what I did.

I was a bit worried that the hard pinch would kill it, but it’s still alive and growing.

I’ll report back with results when they flower…

After 8 years of growing celosia I think I’ve cracked the secret to how to grow it well!

I do a sneaky second pinch just when they are starting to look like they are almost mature.

Otherwise if you pick them when the first flower is mature, all the surrounding buds are wilty. And if you wait until the surrounding buds are mature, the central bud is brown and manky looking.

It’s a bit of extra work…but at least it’s not the type of work that’s hard on your back.

I only use this method for celosia ‘Flamingo Feather’

Let me know if this works well for your celosia this year 🌱

One of the secrets to growing an abundance of flowers is pinching the plants when they are small.

This makes the plant divert all its energy into multiple side shoots. If you pinch low enough, these side shoots still grow to a great length.

It’s called pinching because you can literally pinch the top out with your fingers (if the plants are small enough). We’ve left it a bit later in this video so we’re using snips.

You can even make cuttings (and new plants) from the tips you pinch out…but I don’t usually as I don’t have time!

If you’ve purchased MY PATCH seedlings lately, then you can pinch your zinnias, snapdragons, celosia, phlox, quinoa, marigolds, and amaranthus.

Go on…be brave!
