Practical completion! Looking forward to a G&T on this deck with one happy client, back in her own house again post earthquake. A simple 100m2 house with a six page building consent package. Houses don't always need to be complicated. Move in day tomorrow. Thanks to Taylor Made Homes for great workmanship .

The Bowenvale house is light-filled and feels very peaceful. Late afternoon shadows reach into the interior against the feature timber stair.

A common misconception is that a passive house design means small windows and reduced outlook. Yes, we do assess the windows carefully but the key is to ensure they all do the best job they can. Large openings in key spaces where they are needed, then smaller windows in other spaces that frame views and draw your attention out to the wider landscape.

CKA was established in 2015 by Karen Manson. We started with our own house build and we learnt first hand how to apply the principles of better thermal design to create a low-energy, high-performing family home. Karen has over 15 years of experience behind her, with a strong international background in high-density mixed-use developments, urban design and healthcare. CKA have a particular interest in passive house, medium-density housing, prefabrication and how these are best delivered within the New Zealand market.

Building science combined with sharp, considered design is what drives our practice.
