Believe it it not.

The Port of Wellington story.

Not so long ago.. against pretty much every body with half a brain The Port of WLG decided to build a new waterfront, that would house banks, insurance companies and government tenants. Yay the Port shareholders celebrated, we can turn low yield land into high a much higher yeild land with big 10 story buildings.

WCC knowing they would fall over took the fees and signed the buildings off.

But most of the Lambton Quay rich lister landlords said things like.

Hey Port you cant build reclaimed unstable land, thats unsafe - dumb and it will hurt us a lot if you do that!.

Un preturbed the Port execs went ahead. Nek minute the Port recieves a $789 million insurance payout after the new buildings fell over in the Kaikoura earthquake, and the insurance companies who never like loosing cash, started charging the other 2341 building owners in WELLINGTON more, to claw the pay out back.

Morale of the story?

📍667 people turned to Wellington City Mission’s crisis café in its first year🤝
More than 600 Wellingtonians sought help from the Wellington City Mission’s 24/7 crisis recovery café Kua Mākona i Whakamaru during its first year, highlighting growing demand for safe, community-based mental health support in the capital.

Opened in January 2025, the peer-led service supports people experiencing acute emotional distress in a calm, non-clinical setting. Between January and December, 667 people reached out during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Feedback from people who used the service shows a strong impact:
💠 96% felt reassured and supported
💠 87% felt their mental well-being improved
💠 87% felt their mental wellbeing improved
💠 83% said the support reduced the risk of future crises

The service operates inside the City Mission’s café space and offers connection, food, and practical guidance, helping ease pressure on hospital emergency departments.

City Mission leaders say the results confirm the importance of compassionate, peer-led crisis care in Wellington — and the role community spaces can play in saving lives.

🚨 Armed robbery at Upper Hutt bar; Police appeal for information
Police are investigating an aggravated robbery at a bar in King Street, Upper Hutt, where two men brandished weapons and threatened staff in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Officers were called about 1.30am after the pair approached bar staff and made demands. While no one was physically injured, Police say the incident was deeply unsettling. The offenders fled in a staff member’s vehicle, which was later found abandoned on Sinclair Street.

Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage showing people or vehicles in the King Street and Sinclair Street areas between 11pm Friday and 2.30am Saturday.

The robbery is part of a concerning pattern, with three Hutt Valley bars targeted since 10 December in similar circumstances. Police are working to establish whether the incidents are linked and will be engaging with bar owners across the Hutt Valley and wider Wellington region to discuss staff safety.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police.

🚨 Wellington commuter trains back on track after 18-days of summer shutdown 🚆
Wellington’s commuter rail services are running again today after an 18-day closure for major rail upgrades across the region.

Train services were replaced by buses between Boxing Day and January 12 while crews carried out essential work, including replacing rails on Lower Hutt’s Ava Bridge, upgrading the Otaihanga level crossing in Kāpiti, and starting earthworks in Naenae and Trentham for new power substations.

KiwiRail says the upgrades will improve long-term reliability and help prepare the network for more frequent services and new trains planned for the wider Wellington region in coming years.

Metlink has acknowledged frustrations around replacement buses during the shutdown, with some commuters reporting delays and missed connections, saying improvements to coordination and real-time tracking are ongoing.
