How I select variegated Astrophytum?

Variegated Astrophytum are unique and captivating, but not all are created equal! When buying variegated Astrophytum, I buy variegated Astrophytum with scattered variegation in all the ribs. As much as possible, I buy those with variegation on all of its ribs. They call this type of variegation as ā€œmarblingā€ since it resembles marbles.

I avoid cacti with over 75% variegation, as these tend to grow slowly and lack strength. With low chlorophyll levels, they produce less food, slowing down growth, rooting, and flowering. Fully variegated cacti are also often grafted onto rootstock, which serves as their main food source.

Check out some of my favorite variegated Astrophytum in the photos below! The first four picture are those that I love to collect, meanhwile the 5th picture shows an example of a nearly fully variegated cactus.
