“Payag”, in its final form~
We were able to visit this gem in the hills after a long while, and we’re glad how it turned out; a no frills shelter, a space for family, a calming reprise surrounded by nature. We can’t wait to go back soon!

Checking on this home a few months into being lived in.

Balay MKA

A regular sized home in an urban subdivision, Balay MKA was designed to look massive without actually being one. The charm lies in it being on a street corner; with two sides of the structure exposed. Clean, directional lines as well as simple details and elements trick the eye into merging two different planes into one continuous view. A complImentary fence also provides that same continuity as well as much needed concealment and privacy.

The same treatment was also used in the spaces inside; an open plan was employed to give the users a sense where they are in one place yet could be part of another. A home should not feel divided, after all.

“How many square meters shouldn’t be the sole consideration. The actual perception of space does not equal to its physical size.” - Rie Azuma

A fresh take on the traditional bahay kubo, “Payag” is a compact two bedroom rest house with basic amenities designed to be a simple repose while living the farm life. The pandemic has made people reconsider their lifestyles, and we’re glad that this trend leads us back to more traditional ways of living and building — the use of native materials, making use of natural light and ventilation; the little things that help us thread the earth lightly.

Balay VRE

This was a definite design challenge; the client was intent on incorporating a solar harvesting system into their dream house, but the site was oriented with a south-west frontage, which means the panels would be placed right up front the house.
It was a problem of resolving orientation and systems that would typically clash and sacrifice the aesthetics of a building.
The architectural solution was to use a Butterfly Roof profile, providing the prescribed orientation for harvesting maximum solar energy and at the same time, keep it from being seen from the front. As a bonus, it also provided an opportunity to incorporate another sustainable design feature — rainwater harvesting.
The building turned out into an interesting translation of design solutions; a concept born out of a seemingly ordinary but perplexing design challenge.
