National Heroes Day in the Philippines is an important holiday that honors and reminds the people of the contributions of all national heroes who fought for the country’s independence and growth. Celebrated every last Monday of August, this day was chosen to commemorate the Cry of Pugad Lawin in 1896, which marked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonizers.
The holiday commemorates both known and unknown national heroes, who are recommended and declared based on certain criteria by the National Heroes Committee, established in 1995. Among these heroes are Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Aguinaldo, Apolinario Mabini, Marcelo H. del Pilar, and Sultan Dipatuan Kudarat.
While the celebration is not as grand as Independence Day, Filipinos honor National Heroes Day with parades, wreath-laying at shrines, and small fireworks. This day is significant to Filipinos as it brings awareness and appreciation for the sacrifices made by past generations, ensuring a comfortable and independent life for future generations.
