THEY BLINDED THE ARCHITECTS BECAUSE THEIR DESIGNS ARE TOO BEAUTIFUL!!!

St. Basil's Cathedral - Red Square, Moscow, Russia

There are several theories as to who designed the cathedral. The most widely accepted one is that the cathedral was designed by architects Barma and Postnik.

The legend has it that Ivan the Terrible ordered that the architects be blinded after they completed work on this beautiful cathedral so that they could not replicate or surpass it elsewhere.

Yet this is unlikely to be more than a legend since Postnik was later involved in building the Annunciation Cathedral, as well as the walls and towers of the Kazan Kremlin.

There is a basic scientific principle that HOT AIR RISES and COLD AIR SINKS.

Yes, hot air rises – but to say that it’s the heat’s natural state to want to rise would be wrong. It can move in any direction. Basically, heat travels from an area of higher temperature to a lower temperature.

In scientific terms, this is known as the law of thermodynamics. According to the second law of thermodynamics, heat transfer can occur through convection, conduction, and radiation.

The air exchange between inside and outside air is driven by two forces. One is commonly known as the chimney effect or the stack effect. As hot air rises, it moves outside to the top of your home, and the colder outside air is drawn in from the bottom through gaps, leaks, and windows, etc.

THE UNDERDOG THAT WON THE DESIGN COMPETITION!!!

T H E S Y D N E Y O P E R A H O U S E

In 1956 the state government sponsored an international competition for a design that was to include a building with two halls. Architects from some 30 countries submitted 233 entries.

Jørn Utzon, a Danish Architect, an unknown Architect compared to other renowned designers that join the competition, submitted his drawings right before the competition ended.

Unique among the competition entries, it placed the concert halls side by side, their roofs cantilevering out over the end of Bennelong Point, evoking Sydney’s cliffs and sails.

It is a testament to the strength of his concept, and the imagination of the judging panel, that Utzon’s design was in the end unanimously supported as the WINNER.

The judge's report read: “We have returned again and again to the study of these drawings and are convinced that they present a concept of an opera house ... capable of becoming one of the great buildings of the world.”

On 29 January 1957, New South Wales Premier Joe Cahill announced that the winner of the competition was Design 218 by Jørn Utzon, the 38-year-old Dane from Hellebæk.

PANTHEON - the largest dome ever built in masonry or unreinforced concrete.

"T H E E Y E"

The Pantheon has no windows and the only light penetrates from above streaming down like a river of inner light; towards midday, the rays coming through the Oculus (the Latin word for “eye”) are particularly intense.

A beam of light penetrates this circular hole to create a dramatic effect as it slowly travels across the floor and wall of the rotunda, illuminating them like a spotlight. This intriguing aspect of the Pantheon immediately catches the eye of any visitor who enters the vast circular space.
