Iloilo Organic Gardening & Backyard Chicken

Iloilo Organic Gardening & Backyard Chicken Gardening and backyard chicken using natural methods as much as possible here in tropical Iloilo, Philippines. I wanted to encourage a simple way of living.

This page will feature mostly my gardening experience using photos, videos and may occasionally share useful tips from people, websites and pages that I follow. This is a way for me to document my journey to making my life a little bit more sustainable. I look forward to the day when my family can produce enough, if not all, food that we need without spending too much money. I'm trying to

use gardening as a way to distract myself from a hectic life. Gardening to recharge the soul and fuel the body.

2nd for this season. The soil is a big factor for the size of the fruit. For this season I didn't add compost where this was planted. I had a larger fruit a year ago when my plot has layers of compost on it. Lesson learned.

Our is not complete without squash so this is a must in our garden.

For a family of three, this batch of banana will be consumed for more than a week.

Day 1-4 - This is the time when the fruit is semi-ripe and best for boiling, banana crackers, banana-Q and pochero!

Day 5-until supply last - The bananas will be mostly ripe (yellow). Fully ripe bananas are best for baking like banana bread or banana pie. Of course, wala gid ginakalipatan ang manamit nga kumbo!

Sab-a week meal plan 😄

I only have 3 tundal banana plant and this one is the first harvest for this season. I estimate, it will take at least 5 days before this will turn yellow without putting it in a covered container. When inside a container, I think it will be ready to eat within 3 days. For me, this is the best banana variety if you like to eat the ripe fruit. It is sweeter than saba. This is just my personal preference. It has higher market value than saba variety.

This little fellow found a perfect place to take a nap.
Spiders are one of many beneficial insects.

We call this type of spider in our local tongue, tigre and... Pinoy kids from the 90s know what it means by that. This type is commonly used in spider fighting game way back.

Right now, this tiny fellow wont be used in a game. It will live a happy wild and free life in the garden.

I caught this one yesterday when I noticed a commotion in the chicken coop. I wonder how it was able to get in. It was pecked by 7 chickens. It was a little weak when I released it. A stressful day for this Barred Rail (Hypotaenidia torquata).

Although they look cool, I don't want them near our chickens since wild birds are carriers of diseases like avian flu. We don't kill them on sight but we don't encourage them in the chicken coop.

The swampy area just beside our lot is home to the Tikling. We can often see them hanging out in the garden and near the chicken coop.

Suha (Citrus × microcarpa) or calamansi.

This is my 3 years old tree grown from a 50 pesos air-layered stem. Aside from the refreshing calamansi juice, the fruit skin and extract is a great deodorizer and cleaning agent. Many Pinoy dishes use calamansi as an ingredient. No wonder this is commonly found in many Filipino homes.

I also noticed that it is a preferred nesting tree of birds in the area. Currently, one of my calamansi trees (I have 3 trees) is home of chestnut munia (maya p**a). The same tree where the Yellow Vented Bulbul made their nest months ago.

The yellow spots indicate nutritional deficiency so I will research more on what to do about it. I will try to add compost near the tree.

Calamansi likes water but a well drained soil and a sunny spot.

This is a Best buy!
