BABAD BA sa tubig ang iyong palayan? Aba, kaya pala ito inaatake ng brown plant hopper (BPH), ka-PALAY! 😨😨

Dumarami ang pesteng kulisap na BPH kapag sobrang kapal ng tanim at laging babad sa tubig ang palayan.

Pinamumugaran din nila ang tanim na sobra sa pataba tulad ng nitroheno. Kapag sobra sa nitroheno, lumalambot ang suwi at dahon ng palay kaya madali itong atakehin ng BPH.

Nagdadala rin ito ng sakit na virus tulad ng grassy stunt at ragged stunt.

PAMAHALAAN ANG BPH:
1️⃣ Makipagsabayan ng tanim at gumamit ng matibay na variety.
2️⃣ Sundin ang tamang agwat ng tanim na 20cm X 20cm.
3️⃣ Huwag magspray ng lason sa unang 30 araw pagkalipat tanim o 40 araw pagkasabog tanim upang dumami pa ang mga kaibigang kulisap.
4️⃣ Iwasan ang sobra-sobrang paglalagay ng pataba lalo na ng urea.
5️⃣ Magsagawa ng alternate wetting and drying na pagpapatubig (https://bit.ly/3woqdhQ).

Isang bagong species ng daga na kamukha ng shrew ang natuklasan sa kabundukan ng Davao Oriental at ipinangalan sa isang Pinoy biologist.

Pinangalanan ang Philippine-endemic rodent na Baletemys kampalili. Ang "mys" ay salitang Griyego na ibig sabihin ay daga, at ang "Balete" ay bilang pagkilala sa namayapang Pilipinong field biologist na si Danilo S. Balete.

Ang "Kampalili" naman ay pangalan ng bundok sa Davao Oriental kung saan natuklasan ang daga.

Leo Everest Tapia, student from Philippine Science High School, is thankful for the new genetics-related skills he learned during his internship at the DA-National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) through its Students’ Training Support (STrainS) Program. The internship has also allowed him to comfortably communicate with professionals and other interns in the field of fisheries research.

STrainS is an immersion, on-the-job training (OJT) or internship program designed for high school (junior and senior) and college (undergraduate and graduate) students in the Philippines seeking training at NFRDI. The program is available in two cycles every year.

Preys visit the traps to harvest the pitcher plant's nectar, and in return leave faecal droppings in the pitcher that serve as nutrients for the plant. In some cases, these plants serve as a temporary habitat for some animals.

GABAY sa pagpapatubig, mayroon 'yan!

Sa tulong ng observation well, nalalaman kung kailangan ng magpatubig. Bahagi ito ng alternate wetting and drying (AWD) — isang proseso ng kontroladong pagpapatubig na ‘di nakapagpapababa ng ani.

⭕ PAGGAWA NG OBSERVATION WELL ⭕
1️⃣ Kumuha ng isang biyas ng kawayan na walang buko o kaya ay PVC na tubo na may dayametro na 10sm. Putulin ito sa haba na 25sm.
2️⃣ Mula sa pinakaitaas na bahagi ng kawayan o PVC, magsukat ng 5sm. Maglagay ng paikot na marka at sulatan ng “tag-ulan” o “WS.” Mula sa markang “WS”, muling magsukat ng 5sm. Markahan ng paikot at sulatan ng “tag-araw” o “DS”.
3️⃣ Butasan ang kawayan o PVC gamit ang 3-5mm laki ng pambutas (drill bit). Panatilihin ang 5sm na agwat ng mga butas. Ulitin ito hanggang sa bandang ilalim ng tubo.

PAGPWESTO NG OBSERVATION WELL
✅ Ipwesto ang observation well 1-2m ang layo mula sa pilapil upang mas madali ang pagmonitor ng tubig.
✅ Patayong ibaon ang observation well sa lupa at hugutin ito. Tanggalin ang naipong putik sa loob.
✅ Ulitin ang proseso ng pagbabaon sa lupa hanggang umabot sa markang “WS” kapag tag-ulan o markang “DS” kapag tag-araw.
✅ Ayusin ang observation well nang patayo at siguraduhing ang mga marka ay pantay sa lupa.
✅ Magpatubig ng hanggang 5sm lamang at hintayin na maubos ang tubig sa observation well bago muling magpatubig.

ikaw, may kilala kabang balimbing?

Known locally as balimbing, this distinctively-shaped exotic fruit with five ridges resembles small yellow-orange stars when sliced across.

Balimbing is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and is often dubbed as superfruit. Each star fruit contains up to 22 grams of vitamin C and is rich in dietary fiber, magnesium, potassium, and folic acid. It’s said to strengthen the immune system and is a good natural treatment for various ailments like the common cold and diabetes.

It’s interesting to point out that Filipino politicians with fleeting allegiances are often called balimbing. When used in this context, it loosely translates to “two-faced” and is in reference to the fruit’s many facets.
