Elevate for safety, airflow, and comfort. In a country with only two seasons: sunny and rainy, your modern bahay should be built with height, shade, and breezes in mind. With the recent floods brought by heavy rains, these age-old design principles matter now more than ever.
Design Lessons That Still Work Today
> Raise the main floor โ At least 0.5 m (or more in flood-prone areas) above ground level. This step improves drainage, reduces flood risk, and cools floors naturally by allowing air to circulate underneath.
> Extend your roof eaves โ Even if they challenge a minimalist aesthetic. Wide overhangs shield walls and windows from heavy rain and create shaded, functional outdoor spaces.
> Install large operable windows or louvered panels โ To welcome breezes while keeping the rain out. Pair them with generous window overhangs to ensure both airflow and weather protection.
Stay safe, and design smart! ๐
