So you're thinking of being a plant parent. Let me guess! Is it those lovely Aglaonema plants that are flooding a social media site or is it those Philodendron plants with their exquisite variegation? Whatever it is, something caught your eyes and now you're thinking of becoming a plant parent. This is a very exciting time but before you venture on to this journey of becoming a plant parent, there are a lot of things you should think about and consider before taking home your first plant, or two.
What's great about becoming a plant parent is that you have the ability to pick and choose the perfect fit for you and can start off in the right direction. Here are some things to consider before becoming a plant parent.

Before you begin your journey, think hard and ask yourself why you want to be a plant parent. Is it because you saw a neighbors plant and you fell in love with it or is it because you've been wanting to be a plant parent for a while but just haven't gotten around to it. Whatever the reason is, ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ข๐ณ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ท๐ข๐ฏ๐ต๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐ด ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐ช๐ด๐ข๐ฅ๐ท๐ข๐ฏ๐ต๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐ด of becoming one. Once you head on to that journey, there is no going back.

Whether you've owned a plant before or not, you should ask yourself, "๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ต ๐ต๐บ๐ฑ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ข ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ต ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต ๐ข๐ฎ ๐?" Are you a hands off mom that waits for the plant to tell you they need attention or are you an obsessive compulsive mom? When it comes to plant parenthood, the first step is to pick a plant that works with you and your space.

Are you planning on placing the plants outdoors or indoors? Look at the area where you would like to place the plant. How's the lighting and temperature conditions in that area? Is it getting a lot or little sunlight? Does it require any work in that area? For indoor location, is it close to drafty doors and windows that might cause temperature fluctuations? Or is it in an area where things are comfortably consistent?
Matching your space to the needs of the plant is an important step to make sure you're happy and that your plant thrives instead of fighting to survive. Now that you have your space and location figured out, choose the right plant that fits in your area. Unless you are planning on putting some work in the area you've chosen that gets a lot of sunlight for example, an Aglaonema plant will NOT be your best choice since they require a shaded area with a morning sunshine.

Now that you have your location picked out, purchased your first few plants and excited for more... avoid buying too many plants than you can handle. Don't fall into the "rest of the society" who are buying multiple plants at a time so they can post it on social media. Be responsible! Having 1 plant already makes you a plant parent. Instead, get to know your plant and learn about the plant you're thinking of adding to your collection. I can tell you from experience, just because someone tells you a plant is easy to care for, it doesn't mean it will be easy for you! Every plant is different and have different requirements. Yes, sure...you can read books, watch plant blogs and other resources you can find to help you care for your plant, but ultimately, it will be on you to know what your plant needs. With time and experience, you will learn to recognize the needs of your plants and the plants that you want to add to your collection.
I'm sure others can relate! We've all been there. Being a plant parent is no joke! While it's not as difficult to be a plant parent compared to pets or children, you still need to make time for them. You need to learn their individual needs and set aside some time out of your busy schedule to devote to their care. Making plant care a part of your routine whether it's only a few minutes here and there or a dedicated gardening day is the best way to make sure you are consistent. Not only will your plants be happy and healthy, you will be happy and stressed free!

If you're looking for perfection or for that social media ready plant, then you're in for a surprise! But, if you have the money or willing to spend those big bucks, then you're one of the few and lucky you! We all come imperfect and plants are no different. Look for plants that are healthy. They need time to grow into the beautiful plant you want them to be. It's all about the journey you will have together and not about the destination. Be sure to provide the care they need and most importantly be consistent on giving them them food and water. Do not over water! or your plants will perish.

Some plants take time to acclimate to their new surroundings while others don't mind moving around. If a few leaves drop off in the first week, that's OK! This is expected and it's just your plant adjusting to its new home. However, keep an eye on your plant to make sure there are no other issues present. Be patient! Your plant will eventually adjust and will soon be social media ready! โบ
