*SOIL CONDITIONER*

Soil health is perhaps the most important thing for having productive and beautiful landscaping. Bad soil can limit the amount of water and nutrients that your plants can get, leading to poor (or no) growth. And, because flowers, vegetables, and grass use nutrients from the soil to grow, it is critical to replace these nutrients each year.

Soil amendments and, in particular, organic soil conditioners can improve poor soil, replenish nutrients, and lead to better growth for your plants and grass. There’s no magic bullet in gardening, but using a good soil conditioner is certainly up there on any potential list.

*What is a soil conditioner and a soil amendment? Is this the same as a fertilizer?*
Soil amendments is the broadest term since it can be anything that you add to your soil in order to grow better plants. Using this definition, soil conditioners and fertilizers are both soil amendments. A fertilizer is increasingly just a legal term that refers to a soil amendment that will guarantee a minimum amount of (macro) nutrients that are in the package. However, this is not a guarantee of what nutrients will be available to your plants immediately or in the future (if at all).
A fertilizer adds nutrients to the soil while a soil conditioner makes a soil healthier, allowing plant roots to more easily get and use nutrients. It’s not clear cut, however, since some soil conditioners also add macro and micro nutrients to the soil. In contract, most fertilizers don’t improve soil structure and only add macro nutrients.
There are times that you may use combination of both a fertilizer and a soil conditioner in a gardening project.

*NPK 10-10-10*

NPK 10 10 10 is a highly concentrated, balanced plant fertiliser. It contains equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It is ideal for growing plants in poor quality soils as it provides a high amount of each of the three essential plant macronutrients. Its balanced NPK ratio means it contains all the major nutrients a plant needs in equal measure. This makes it suitable for use throughout the life cycle of a plant: in both the growth phase and the blooming period.

When it comes to NPK ratios, the size of the numbers indicates the concentration of the solution—each number represents how much nitrogen, phosphorous, or potassium the fertiliser contains.

NPK 10 10 10 is one of the most concentrated fertilisers commonly available. Typically, numbers in the NPK ratio won’t be much higher than 10 and often they are lower.

*NPK 10 10 10 Fertiliser: Uses and Effects*
Since it is so highly concentrated, NPK 10 10 10 has specific uses and is not an everyday plant fertiliser. For example, NPK 10 10 10 is excellent for hanging baskets due to the increased nutrient leaching that occurs.

It is also appropriate to use NPK 10 10 10 in poor-quality soil. The strong fertiliser can quickly and effectively raise the nutrient content of the soil providing a suitable foundation for plants. However, it should be used for just a short period of time and then either be diluted or substituted for another, less concentrated fertiliser.

*Using NPK 10 10 10 for Fertiliser Spikes*
Using a strong, concentrated fertiliser such as NPK 10 10 10 at a specific time on a one-off basis can be an effective method for jumpstarting plant growth. This technique is called fertiliser spiking.

For instance, it can useful to add NPK 10 10 10 granules to the soil when planting trees. Adding a sprinkling of the fertiliser to the hole before adding the tree will ensure the young tree has all the nutrients it requires to make a great start in life.

Similarly, adding NPK 10 10 10 to vegetables shortly have they have been transplanted out will give them a boost and result in an abundant harvest.

In both cases, the NPK 10 10 10 fertiliser need only be used once, after which

*NPK 20-20-20+TE*

NPK 20 20 20 is a highly concentrated, balanced plant fertiliser. It contains equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and tracing of some important elements (TE) i.e. Cu, Fe, B, Zn, Mn, Co. It is ideal for growing plants in poor quality soils as it provides a high amount of each of the three essential plant macronutrients.
*NPK 20 20 20 Fertiliser: Understanding Triple 20*
NPK 20 20 20, sometimes referred to simply as Triple 20, is normally available as a liquid solution or a water-soluble powder.

Its balanced NPK ratio means it contains all the major nutrients a plant needs in equal measure. This makes it suitable for use throughout the life cycle of a plant: in both the growth phase and the blooming period.

*EPSOM SALT*

Using Epsom salt as an inexpensive way to start or improve your garden.
Epsom salt – actually magnesium sulfate – helps seeds germinate, makes plants grow bushier, produces more flowers, increases chlorophyll production and deters pests, such as slugs and voles. It also provides vital nutrients to supplement your regular fertilizer.

*Here are some other tips for using Epsom salt in the garden:*
1- Houseplants: 2 tablespoons per gallon of water; feed plants monthly.
2- Roses: 1 tablespoon per foot of plant height per plant; apply every two weeks. Also scratch 1/2 cup into soil at base to encourage flowering canes and healthy new basal cane growth. Soak unplanted bushes in 1 cup of Epsom Salt per gallon of water to help roots recover. Add a tablespoon of Epsom Salt to each hole at planting time.
3- Shrubs (evergreens, azaleas, rhododendron): 1 tablespoon per 9 square feet. Apply over root zone every 2-4 weeks.
4- Lawns: Apply 3 pounds for every 1,250 square feet with a spreader, or dilute in water and apply with a sprayer.
5- Trees: Apply 2 tablespoons per 9 square feet. Apply over the root zone 3 times annually.
6- Garden Startup: Sprinkle 1 cup per 100 square feet. Mix into soil before planting.

*GARDEN SULPHUR*

Sulphur/Sulfer is a natural element that is toxic to fungus. It is available in several formulations including a RTU spray, wettable powder and dust. It is used for the control and prevention of black spot, rusts, leaf spots and powdery mildew on roses, other ornamentals, fruits and vegetables. It is also used less frequently as a miticide on some of the above. Sulfur disrupts the metabolic functioning of fungi and is one of the oldest known pesticides. For organic gardeners, sulfur is an important fungal disease control product.
It has low toxicity to humans, however, sulfur can irritate skin and eyes and spray vapors should not be inhaled. Non- toxic to birds, bees and fish.
