Dear Hunter Dear Hunter is a cartopological practice, specialized in mapping (the use of) public space. Now building in Vaals (NL).

Follow there for the latest news & updates! We’re a cartopological research practice and produce alternative maps and atlases through qualitative fieldwork. Being a ‘Dear Hunter’, referring to the behaviour and methods of hunters, means that we thoroughly immerse in situations in order to understand them completely, mostly by living and working on-site for relatively long periods of time. This met

hod allows us to bridge the gap between streets and policy, people and space, bureaucratic systems and physical living worlds. Our maps are being used in various contexts. Decision makers and city planners use them to get a better understanding of the area they are working on, resulting in designs that are better grounded in its surrounding, or more successful interventions in spaces that lacked quality and livability. We also feel at home at the fringes of the art world. Contributing to exhibitions and international art projects, as well as teaching (fine) art and architecture students about the interaction between people and space. The third context our maps reside in, is Academia. Lecturing, publishing and working on a PhD on cartopology, we are informed (and do inform) scholarly fields such as anthropology, sociology and urban studies. Finally however, We feel most at home in public space. Surrounded by the people who are the reason we make maps in the first place. Working with the users of a space, translating their knowledge into maps. Creating more inclusive, sustainable and pleasant living spaces.

Drawing, talking, taking part in daily life and observing it. Repeating this for a while now here in Stockholm. The map is slowly coming together and… Did you know that the drinking water in Stockholm is stored for about 10 - 15 years in lake Mälaren before it finds its way to the tap? Little facts and larger mechanisms, they all find their way to the paper.

Wij zijn nu zo’n twee en een halve week in Gdansk. Da’s nog niet op de helft van onze totale verblijfsduur, maar wel een mooi moment om eens de balans op te maken.

In deze relatief korte tijd leerden we de stad al een beetje kennen; als een open, vooruitstrevende stad met nogal wat historisch erfgoed en toch erg gericht op de toekomst. Overal het zicht op bouwkranen en het geluid van boren, lassen en betonmolens. Maar ook, een stad aan- en met het water: Uitkijkend richting zee gaan bouwkranen naadloos over in havenkranen en waterrecreatie reikt van de Oostzee tot in de haarvaten van het oude centrum.

Systemen om dit water te beheersen zijn alomtegenwoordig en lijken vooral uit vervlogen tijden te zijn, maar daarom niet minder effectief. De in de 17e eeuw ontwikkelde kanalen, sluizen en poorten werken soms verrassend eenvoudig en maken gebruik van universele natuurkundige principes zoals de zwaartekracht. Goed onderhoud, een druppeltje olie en wat liefde maakt dat de stad schijnbaar veilig en vertrouwd kan genieten van al het haar omringend water.

Maar, is het toekomstbestendig? Die vraag lijkt nog niet écht te leven. Onze kaart, waarin we proberen de verbinding tussen watermanagement en het dagelijks leven zichtbaar te maken, gaat deze vraag ongetwijfeld agenderen.

Wordt zeker vervolgd!

Voor Turning the Tide zijn we aangekomen in Gdansk, Polen! De komende vijf weken proberen we het watersysteem van deze prachtige stad te begrijpen, maar ook hoe de inwoners omgaan met klimaatverandering. De Wisla rivier en de Motlawa rivier zijn beide van groot belang voor deze stad, en het begrijpen van deze door een culturele lens is noodzakelijk om de stad leefbaar te houden voor alle inwoners. Met dank aan Instytut Kultury Miejskiej voor de fijne ontvangst!

Op LimburgDoc is nu de documentaire ‘Onze Berg’ te zien. Hierin wordt een intiem portret geschetst van de Wilhelminaberg in Landgraaf, een steenberg die nogal wat gezichten heeft. Wij hebben bijgedragen aan het onderzoek voorafgaand aan de documentaire en Marlies Vermeulen verschijnt zelf nog in beeld wanneer het gaat over het ambigue karakter van de berg als natuur- en landschapselement.

Our Story

We’re a cartopological research practice and produce alternative maps and atlases through qualitative fieldwork. Being a ‘Dear Hunter’, referring to the behaviour and methods of hunters, means that we thoroughly immerse in situations in order to understand them completely, mostly by living and working on-site for relatively long periods of time.

Working on-site as hunters, we collect a lot of data and information. Compare it to the work of an anthropologist, for example. Just gathering information and writing long passages about it doesn’t lead to a clear image or the exploration for new possibilities. Therefore, we use cartography to make our research approachable and usable for our clients. We map our research in hands-on maps and atlasses providing an essential layer of information for decision makers.
