Most churches people visit in Europe have been restored back to perfection.
Lisbon’s Church of São Domingos took a very different approach.
Originally built in the 1200s, the church was heavily damaged by a fire in 1959. The roof was rebuilt, but much of the interior was intentionally left scarred, cracked, darkened, and worn.
Instead of erasing the damage, they preserved it.
And honestly, that’s what makes the space feel so powerful.
