Terrra, Brezoi (2026)

For a few days at the end of April, several members of TERRRA were in Brezoi for a seminar as part of the CoNECT research project, supported by the European Commision. It was an opportunity to organize a brainstorming session (partially online with other TERRRA members based in different countries) and to continue reflecting on upcoming actions. On this occasion, we began a series of interviews with local stakeholders to better understand community organization, economic activities related to natural heritage, and more. This also allowed us to gather new information for the collective library dedicated to the themes of the TERRRA project.

The presentation given by Gilles Clément at the School of Planetary Gardeners – TERRRA (Brezoi, June 2023) focused on the importance of water in ecological approaches, while also drawing numerous connections to broader perspectives—cultural, economic, social, and political.
By alternating between theoretical insights and visuals from his projects and workshops in various European contexts, this presentation was grounded in scientific data, contextual considerations, and, above all, conveyed hope for a society that is both ecological and humanistic!
And, of course, discussions with Gilles continued throughout the seminar.

La présentation faite par Gilles Clément lors de l'École des Jardiniers Planétaires TERRRA (Brezoi, juin 2023) a été focalisée sur l'importance de l'eau dans les démarches écologiques, tout en réalisant des nombreuses connexions avec des points de vue plus généraux (culturels, économiques, sociaux et politiques). En alternant les aspects théoriques avec des images de ses projets ou des workshops organisés en différents contextes européens, cette présentation est basée sur des données scientifiques, des considérations contextuelles et, surtout, elle apporte un espoir pour une société à la fois écologique et humaniste! Et, bien évidemment, les échanges avec Gilles ont suivi pendant toute la période du séminaire.

In August, we gathered in Romania for the second edition of the TERRRA Network seminar, organized by atelier AAA.
With construction complete, the "School of Planetary Gardeners" is now taking shape in Brezoi, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains.
This co-purchased site serves as a shared space for educational and agroecological experimentation, with facilities for seminars and community living. Days filled with presentations, talks, and workshops connected local and global voices, highlighting the TERRRA Network's strength of bringing together diverse perspectives.
Architects, gardeners, artists, and activists all sharing interest in exploring sustainable living, fostering new alliances with nature, balancing production and consumption, and bridge technology and local sustainable practices.
Huge thanks to Doina Petrescu, Constantin Petcou, Gilles Clément and everyone who made this gathering possible-looking forward to what's next in Brezoi!

En août, nous nous sommes réunis en Roumanie pour la deuxième édition du séminaire du Réseau TERRRA, organisé par atelier AAA.
Avec la construction achevée, l'École des Jardiniers Planétaires prend désormais forme à Brezoi, nichée au cœur des montagnes des Carpates.
Ce site co-acquis sert d’espace partagé dédié à l’éducation et à l’expérimentation agroécologique, avec des installations adaptées aux séminaires et à la vie communautaire. Des journées rythmées par des présentations, des discussions et des ateliers ont permis de relier des voix locales et globales, mettant en lumière la force du Réseau TERRRA, qui réside dans sa capacité à rassembler des perspectives diverses.
Architectes, jardiniers, artistes et activistes ont partagé un intérêt commun pour l’exploration de modes de vie durables, la construction de nouvelles alliances avec la nature, l’équilibre entre production et consommation, ainsi que le lien entre technologies et pratiques locales durables.
Un immense merci à Doina Petrescu, Constantin Petcou, Gilles Clément, et à toutes les personnes qui ont rendu cette rencontre possible – impatients de voir la suite à Brezoi !

The School of Planetary Gardeners – TERRRA once again brought wonderful surprises this year!
Our visit to the ASTRA Museum (Sibiu) began with an impressive presentation by Mirela Iancu (Deputy Director), who spoke about the museum’s unique character as well as potential partnerships. Other spontaneous but equally fascinating presentations followed: Father M. Preoteasa from Brezoi shared insights on the history and evolution of Brezoi, Brîndușa Tudor discussed the complex approach behind the Metakitchen project, Cristina and Paul Budan from the ‘Pe Topolog in sus’ collective talked about ecological activism for the preservation of a territory, and Tudor Elian presented his archival work at the Museum of the Romanian Peasant and its ethnological discoveries.
Continuing the tradition established in 2023, several participants contributed to our shared documentary and tool resources, including the recently published book “Devenir Jardinier Planétaire”, seeds and cuttings brought by Gilles Clément, and botanical observation magnifiers provided by Véronique Mure.
However, during our travels, we also witnessed wildfires caused by an unusual heatwave in this geographic area—a stark reminder that strengthens our determination to continue acting for a sustainable ecological future!

L’École des Jardiniers Planétaires TERRRA a eu des belles surprises cette année encore !
La visite du Musée ASTRA (Sibiu) a commencé avec une présentation impressionnante par Mirela Iancu (directrice adjointe) sur la spécificité du musée mais aussi des partenariats possibles. D’autres présentations spontanées, mais d’autant plus intéressantes, ont été réalisées par le prêtre de Brezoi M.Preoteasa (sur l’histoire et l’évolution de Brezoi), Brîndușa Tudor (la démarche complexe autour du projet Metakitchen), Cristina et Paul Budan du collectif ‘Pe Topolog in sus’ (le militantisme écologique pour un territoire à préserver), Tudor Elian (le travail d’archive au Musée du Paysan et ses surprises ethnologiques). En continuité avec la tradition instituée en 2023, plusieurs participants ont apporté leur contribution à la base documentaire et d’outils communs, notamment le récent livre « Devenir Jardinier Planétaire» et des graines et boutures apportées par Gilles Clément, des loupes d’observation botanique apportées par Véronique Mure…
Néanmoins, dans nos périples, nous avons observé des feux de forets dus à une période de canicule inhabituelle dans cette zone géographique … ce qui nous motivent encore plus à continuer d’agir pour un futur écologique !

During this summer’s School of Planetary Gardeners – TERRRA, we had the privilege of attending and exchanging ideas with Gilles Clément (FR) on “Commitments to the Future”, Véronique Mure (FR) on “Adapting Gardens to Climate Change”, Doina Petrescu (RO/FR) and Constantin Petcou (RO/FR) on “The Potential of TERRRA Sites for Experimenting with the Future”, Indra Gleizde (LV/NL) on “The Rural as a Space for Creative Freedom in These Challenging Times”, Meike Schälk (GE/SW) on “Re-storying a River” in northern Sweden, Erika Mayr (GE/IT) on “Reflections on Bees and Beekeeping”, and Florin Stoican (RO) on “Rural and Urban Communities for Heritage Conservation”.
Several members of the TERRRA network presented their involvement in the project, including Constantin Petcou (RO/FR), Doina Petrescu (RO/FR), Meike Schalk (GE/SW), Tincuta Henzel (RO), Indra Gleizde (LV/NL), Maria Alexandrescu (CA/RO), Daniela Calciu (RO), Vladimir Us (MO), and Tudor Elian (RO), who were present in Brezoi, while Irena Bauman (UK), Apolonija Sustersic (NO/SL), Ana Mendez de Andes (ES), Ana Kun (RO), and Carl-Johan Vesterlund (SW) joined online.
Other seminar participants also took part in discussions about upcoming TERRRA projects.

During the TERRRA / ABC residencies, Anthony Macharinow continued his observations and studies on the insects present on the site. Nina Hourdin and Vladimir Slonska focused on the "edible forest" project, while Hadrien Cassan sorted and repurposed construction leftovers to create several structures, including an observation platform in the forest.
Additionally, Joanna von Essen participated in a residency in partnership with EUNIC Romania and the Goethe-Institut, as part of Adelina Luft's curatorial program, exploring themes related to water.

This year, we welcomed five residents to the TERRRA site, focusing on themes aligned with our collective project for a pedagogical and ecological experimentation center. Each resident worked on individually chosen topics while also contributing to the development of ecological infrastructures as part of the European ABC project.
Other initiatives and structures were collaboratively designed and built, such as a shower integrated into a hay bale system, a pond for extreme rainfall periods, and more.
The residencies also fostered new local connections, provided opportunities to explore the natural environment, and offered insights into local agricultural and food practices.

Cette année nous avons reçu cinq résidents sur le site TERRRA sur des thématiques en cohérence avec notre projet collectif de centre pédagogique et d'expérimentation écologique. Les résidents ont travaillé sur des thématiques choisies par chacun et, à la fois, sur l'avancement des aménagements écologiques dans le cadre du projet européen ABC. D'autres sujets et aménagements ont été initiés par un travail réalisé en collectif (do**he / meule de foin, mare pour les périodes pluviales extrêmes, etc.). Les résidences ont permis de faire des nouveaux contacts localement, d'explorer la nature, de se renseigner sur les pratiques agricoles et alimentaires locales…
