Sand is commonly used to improve drainage in soil. Like most inorganic components in growing media, it provides no nutrients to the plant. It's chemical and physical structure means that it does not hang on to nutrients and water very well. This makes it suited for growing plants that thrive in these conditions like cacti or succulents. Sand is also commonly found in terrarium mixes as its chemically inert and does not rot.

When picking sand for your mix, its important to pick river sand or builders sand. Beach sand is too salty for most plants to tolerate and sand from crushed rock may contain other contaminants.

If you've seen what looks like little styrofoam beads in your soil, what you've most likely seen is perlite.

It's a non-toxic, chemically inert product of volcanic sand that is typically added to soil mixes in order to improve aeration and drainage!
