Gardening at St Iggy's

Gardening at St Iggy's Gardening@St Iggy's is our attempt to live Laudato Si (Care for our common home). Just a small group but a passionate one.

We aim to create awareness that we can all grow our own greens, live healthily and be at peace with His beautiful creation.

Our Garden is blossoming again. Plots of edibles have sprouted - Herbal/Medicinal Plants, Herbs/Plants for Cooking, Bayam, Okra, Brinjal, Yam, Turnips, and more!

Our signature fruit tree range has also continued to bear fruits - lemons, starfruit, papayas, bananas, passion fruits, limes. The others are flowering and/or showing signs of healthy growth - durian, soursop, custard apples, and more.

We are hoping to get our flowering plants/ornamentals up and blossoming soon.

Despite the many months of drainage expansion works around our garden area, these bougainvilleas are doing so well! What a welcome sight when we come down the driveway towards the Sacred Heart Hall.

We have decided not to remove them from the troughs after the drainage works are completed. When our gardening group took over managing some of the planted areas, these bougainvilleas were already "an institution" - having been there for the longest time. However, we had to do a lot of hard pruning (cutting them till almost bare) to force the new shoots, branches and leaves to sprout. And, after more than a year of patient pruning, adding of compost and fertilisers, lots of thorn pricks and and more pruning, its finally paid off. They are so hardy and nature has taken its course....they have naturally regained their strength and beauty. It would be a pity to remove them - maybe its the bougainvilleas' way of telling us to let them thrive here, with their beautiful blooms .☀

January 2020 saw us starting afresh with the Nursery area - adding to the plant collection, propagating plants displaced by the drainage/walkway project, improving the soil condition in each pot (adding soil, compost, fertiliser), and getting to know each other better.

Thanksgiving Dinner for Gardening Group Members. Held on Friday 29 November 2019 at Sacred Heart Hall.

It was a Thank You dinner for all the hard work which went into preparing, organising and carrying our 5th Farmers Market.

It was also a Thank You dinner for the regulars amongst us - who have spent many hours "toiling and working" in the Church Garden...... transforming it into a truly Edible Garden and a a feast for our eyes.

We are indeed blessed to have the church allow us to create green spaces within the church grounds, filled with edible and ornamental plants, and fruit trees. It is so refreshing to come in to work the soil, propagate the plants, and just to de-stress here. And the joy of seeing the flowers bloom and the fruits form. The pretty butterflies and birds that stop by.

Its our little bit for Laudato Si .... care for our common home.
