When building a dedicated Koi pond, many focus heavily on filtration systems or waterproofing membranes. While those are essential, the real foundation—literally—starts with the concrete slab.

As shown in this clip, properly mixing and pouring the concrete is a step you cannot afford to rush or compromise on. Here is why:
⚖️ The Massive Weight of Water
Water is heavy—1,000 liters equals approximately 1 ton of load. A standard Koi pond can hold tens of thousands of liters, placing immense, continuous hydrostatic pressure on the base slab.

💥 Structural Weakness & Cracking
If the concrete mix is incorrect or poorly mixed:
Structural strength is severely compromised.
Micro-fractures and structural cracks will inevitably form under the heavy load over time.

Not All Koi Pond Filtration Systems Are Created Equal (PART 2) 🐟

Why does an undergravel filter look so attractive?
Usually, it’s the lower price and faster installation. But when it comes to a proper koi pond, cheap and fast doesn’t always mean better.

Undergravel filtration relies on water being drawn through the gravel at the bottom of the pond. Over time, fish waste, sludge and organic debris can accumulate beneath the gravel, making it difficult to remove and that’s when the nightmare starts. 😰

This can lead to:

❌ Poor waste removal
❌ Accumulation of organic waste
❌ Difficult & costly maintenance
❌ Less control over mechanical and biological filtration
❌ Poorer water quality and unhealthy koi

A good koi filtration system should remove waste efficiently, provide sufficient biological filtration and make maintenance easy.
