a few months back, we noticed a dark patch on our ceiling in the service yard that was slowly spreading. i always thought ceiling leaks are an “old flat” problem, not something that happens to newer BTOs, but turns out it happens sometimes too.

we contacted our town council for help and they replied the next day to arrange an inspection - we were genuinely surprised at how fast this got picked up!!! the whole process took a bit of time, but the team was really prompt in replying and monitoring the issue. we were so impressed that we wrote a letter of commendation for their speed and service :)

anyway, if you ever spot something similar, don’t panic ok - reach out to your HDB facilities management / town council team, and it can get sorted (search for yours via the LifeSG Town Council Locator). Btw, if you’ve just moved in, don’t worry! BTO flats typically come with a 1 to 5-year warranty (DLP) that covers ceiling leaks and external wall seepage.

I’m quite thankful that this leak could be resolved fairly easily and quickly, and at no cost to us as well. have any of you faced this issue when you first moved in?

as you might have noticed, i’ve been on crutches for what feels like a really long time.

as someone who enjoys playing sports and working out, my entire routine was halted to a stop overnight - and it was not something i really wanted to process ☹️

i didn’t want to think about how this would affect my plans with friends, the looong recovery ahead (months before i can go back to F45), the cost (only partially insured), or having to forfeit our flight tickets to japan.

BUT!! you know what, i’ve received so much kindness and generosity from people that those things feel like they don’t really matter as much :)

sundubu jjigae is one of the first korean dishes i ever tried and a dish that we always go back to! (to me the secret is the broth - stir fry the aromatics until fragrant, and use stock instead of water)

this recipe is so versatile and beginner friendly 🥢

Save for later 💌
Ingredients (serves 2-3 pax):
6 - 8 prawns prawns
100g clams or mussels
300g soft tofu (sundubu)
1 onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 chopped spring onion
1 tbsp gochujang
1 tbsp soy sauce
30g kimchi
650ml anchovy or dashi stock
1 pack mushrooms
2 eggs
sesame oil to finish

Steps:
1. sauté garlic, spring onion, and onion until translucent and aromatic
2. add gochujang, soy sauce, and kimchi stir for a minute
3. pour in stock, bring it to a boil before adding seafood, simmer for 3 min
4. add in mushrooms, spoon in tofu, simmer for another 5 min then turn off the heat
5. crack in eggs, let it set slightly
6. finish with a drizzle of sesame oil

serve straight from the pot with steamed rice, kimchi, and whatever banchan you have on hand 🍚 we’re using the Le Creuset Bleu Riviera Signature Soup Pot (26cm) for this

the reality of what the last 3 months (101 days to be exact) looked like. yesterday was the first day outside WALKING without crutches... i can’t believe this day is finally here!! ahh!! 🥹

beyond the fun stuff i usually share on this page, i wanted to share the raw moments too. the injury, the recovery, all of it. little by little, day by day - i didn’t really notice the progress while i was in it. i was always complaining it was so slow and taking too long. but looking back now, i realised that i’ve actually come so far.

p.s. for those who missed earlier updates - i partially tore my achilles playing badminton. not a serious injury by any means, but i decided to skip surgery and let it heal on its own. i still have a longg way to go till i can go back to my usual sports / fitness level, but it’s ok, I’ll take it slow 🌸

everyone’s opinion differs, but here’s my takeaway three years living here - most things I’d rather spend on are things I need to touch or use everyday e.g. the sofa, entertainment system, etc.

these are probably worth investing more time and effort into finding one we really like and feel comfortable with. there will always be trade-offs given budget and space constraints.
