Most people assume cleaning products are tightly regulated. Certainly, cleaning companies must be forced to prove their ingredients are safe, right?

Yeah... about that:

60,000 chemicals were grandfathered in when the Toxic Substances Control Act was passed in 1976. No safety review required. This includes the most predominant ingredients in conventional cleaning products, like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Fifty years later and we're told to assume they're safe because, "well, we've always used it."

That's not proof of safety. That's the absence of scrutiny.

What if the "choices" on the cleaning aisle aren't really choices at all?

A handful of mega corporations own the brands you've trusted for years. And behind different labels, you'll find the same petrochemical-based ingredients… the ones linked to the health concerns families worry about most.

Removing the fragrance and calling it "free and clear" is the easiest change a brand can make. It doesn't make the rest of the formula safe.

We're Matthew and Gabby, a chemical engineer and an environmental scientist who spent a decade inside the industries that make and regulate cleaning products. When we couldn't find a brand that met our own standards, we built Be Better Goods in Akron, Ohio.

I’m a chemical engineer, and I spent nearly a decade working in the cleaning chemicals industry.
