Fool Proof Spindle Seating

Angles and alignment matter when making chairs and getting the math right is critical, but here’s a little trick you can do to avoid having to worry about it. Set your spindle, making sure it’s lined up to the coordinating point, and then use a 1/4” scrap as a leveling guide to cut around the shoulder with a good flush cut saw like this one from , then clean it up with a chisel, and it will seat perfectly every time.

Carving A New Woodworking Path

When it comes to Windsor chairs, the seat is literally what holds it all together, and shaping the contours is what makes them so comfortable. There are a few different ways to approach this but after a lot of research we settled on this Travisher from because of its ease of use and versatility. Aside from making some of the highest quality tools available, James Mursell also provides a number of resources to help hone your skills, including this awesome book that covers everything you need to know about Windsor chair making. Making chairs in general can be intimidating, and the classic Windsor style can seem daunting because of the compound angles involved, but James has laid out an easy to follow road map to help you master this timeless craft.

DIY Non Toxic Wood Finish: Recipe In Description Below

We spent a long time perfecting a non toxic traditional finish to use on an exciting upcoming project, because sometimes period furniture needs period appropriate finish. Stay tuned to see what we’re cooking up! This soft wax finish is made with only 3 natural ingredients, is to apply and repair, and provides strong protection. It also ages with the furniture while helping develop a beautiful patina as it wears and picks up the natural oils and dirt from use.

Soft Wax Wood Finish
4 parts Tallahassee Tung Oil
2 parts pure bee’s wax
1/2 part Tallahassee Tung Oil’s pure citrus solvent

1. Heat oil to 150 degrees
2. Stir in bee’s wax
3. Add citrus solvent when wax has melted and thoroughly stir to combine
4. Set aside to cool

Sand wood to at least 220 and thoroughly buff in finish with a mildly abrasive scouring pad and let sit for a few minutes to ensure maximum absorption. Buff off excess with a lint free cloth and let dry for a few hours until dry to the touch. Repeat application steps to any areas that appear dull. The idea is to basically burnish the wood while apply the finish. This will give the wood a beautiful natural look and an unbelievably soft feel.

Notes:
By increasing or decreasing the amount of solvent you can adjust the firmness of the finish.
You can also replace some of the bee’s wax with carnauba wax to increase the final shine of the piece. I would suggest starting with 3/1 ratio of bee’s to carnauba.

It Takes A Lot Of Work To Look This Good

A ton of behind the scenes work goes into making book matched panels for doors. Especially if you start from rough sawn lumber like we do with all our furniture. But the end result is worth all that extra effort. Seeing that old growth cherry grain pop when the finish hits never gets old!

How To Fill Knots Fast!

Filling deeper knots, cracks, and other voids typically grinds a project to a halt because of epoxy cure times. But this uv filler from cuts what once took hours to a few minutes. The key is to add the filler in small “lifts” (approximately 1/8” deep) to ensure the uv light can fully cure between layers. It dries super clear with no bubbles or other imperfections. Now if you’ve seen any of our videos then you’ll know that we prefer black filler, luckily there’s an easy solution. Keep your final layer of uv filler just below the surface, lightly scuff with sand paper to ensure proper adhesion, and then add black CA glue (we prefer ) to finish the fill.

Much Needed Shop Upgrade!

Finally had a chance to use the new portamate pro compact pocket hole jig from to replace our shop’s leaky inefficient roll up door with some solid double doors that can be insulated! Their cast metal body is a serious upgrade to the cheap blue plastic one we’re all used to, and the easy to use gauge system makes screw selection a breeze. Plus the sawdust exhaust port is oddly satisfying 😂
