Have been taking a break from instagram and woodworking but getting back into the swing of things. We’re excited to share some house projects we’ve been working on and some that we’re about to start. For now though, it’s vacation time in the woods, which means a perfect time to carve some spoons and spreaders.

Cocktail smokers!? Sure why not. Love being able to use smaller pieces that would otherwise go to the burn pile to make something nice and useable. This one is olive wood with some oak wood shavings inside. Sure makes a smoky drink, but the pictures come out truly incredible!

Looking for some locally made holiday gifts this year? Check out the Alameda Winter Market this Saturday, December 7 from 1-7 pm on Central Ave and the nearby Parking Lot between Central and Alameda Ave. We’ll be right by Troy and across the street from the movie theater. We’ll have cutting and charcuterie boards, a bunch of cheese knives, cooking spoons, propagation stations and more.

In addition to a whole bunch of local vendors, there will be food, beer, and wine, so should be a great way to celebrate the holiday season and support local businesses. And don’t forget the hot cocoa stroll and tree lighting too!

Our cutting and charcuterie boards go through multiple rounds of sanding before we apply the finish. Each round consists of finer grit sanding and water popping the wood to ensure a smooth and lasting finish. The first water popping is definitely a highlight since we get to see the grain for the first time in all of its glory. Here is a batch of olive wood charcuterie boards we’re working on that just went through the water popping process. Look at that grain! 👀

You can pick one of these up at the Alameda Holiday Boutique on November 2nd and 3rd, 10am-4pm.

Reflecting on some spoon designs lately. While I do use some templates for the cooking spoons that I make, a design sometimes changes to accommodate the grain pattern and structure of the wood resulting in each piece being completely unique. I also love working with different species of wood and getting to see how diverse nature can be from something like a piece of wood that often looks and feels similar on the outside to an untrained eye. These are made out of apple, lemon, and maple wood. Finished with oil and beeswax.
