Back then, a wooden beam could last for decades.
That beam came from trees that had grown for many decades, with up to 60 annual growth rings packed tightly together like layers of natural steel.
It was that density that gave the wood its remarkable strength.
But today, everything has changed.
Trees are often cut down while still young, with only about 15 growth rings.
They grow quickly, but they do not have enough time to mature and harden.
