The Crandall Garden Restoration Project

The Crandall Garden Restoration Project This is an Alfred community project to restore the beautiful garden that was once next to the Carria Historical photos seem to be rare.

The original garden was said to be built by one of AU's President's for his wife. It included a gazebo of unknown materials, but in one existing photo appears to have a terra cotta tile roof. The original garden also had a cement bridge which still exists, (Please see photos) and a shallow pond. The new garden has been initially approved by the Alfred planning board for landscaping. Construction o

f the gazebo will be as close to the original as possible. Any information that you can share would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to join the committee to restore this wonderful space or would like to submit information that would be helpful, please contact Allecia at 607-661-6080.

The garden space got some helping hands today from the amazing young men of Kappa Sigma Epsilon. Many thanks for removing more brush, refuse, raking leaves from the Kenyon playground, and planting daffodil bulbs to be enjoyed in the Spring.

Hello everyone! After taking 4 seasons (ok actually 8) to observe the space after clearing out brush, it's time to get back to work! Water flows and plant habits have been documented and we are ready to move a plan into action. Today we met with Alfred State students who tested the garden soil pH collected from both sides of the building. No surprise that it is a sweet 6.49 in the historic garden and 6.82 on the opposite side of the carriage house (Alfred Montessori School) building, with a texture of silty clay loam. A great big thanks to Jessica Hutchison at Alfred State for the expertise as well as the offer to help out with soil needs on the project as we go along.
