There are no closets in my new home, can you help?         Years ago homes were built with little or no closet space because a closet was then considered a room and taxes were paid per room in your home.  Wardrobes and armoires were used to store most garments and hooks could be found in every room.

You have many options in a home with no closets.  If space is available, building a closet may be your best bet.  Simply build this closet off of an existing wall.  A freestanding closet can be custom-designed and built to meet all of your needs without the fuss and mess of building a closet.  A freestanding wall system may be added at any time and taken with you when you move.

If you are without a closet near the entrance to your home, you may choose from the above ideas.  Add a coat tree or some hooks onto a wall for storage.  The negative about hooks and coat trees is that they tend to accumulate garments and look cluttered.  This can be an unattractive sight.

Closet space may still be insufficient so consider keeping sweaters, tee shirts, golf shirts, or other foldable items in a dresser or armoire.  Ideally, a newly organized closet will help you store your hanging garments and possibly help you unclutter your existing drawer space.

Before you attempt this task of adding closets to your old home get some expert advice from Creative Closets, Ltd.  We can help you determine what would be best for you and help you on your road to organization.

We would like to build a closet on an entire wall in our master bedroom, any ideas?         What a wonderful idea to designate a whole wall for all of your personal storage needs.  Your first decision of course will be on which wall to design your closet.  Draw a floor plan of your master bedroom using an alternate wall on which to build your closet.  Consider the placement of the furniture in the bedroom to allow easy access to everything.

Any closet built to house hanging clothes must be at least 24" deep.  Areas for double hanging must be at least 84" high.  A closet can be built with 2 x 4's and drywall or a custom laminated freestanding wall system can be designed to meet all of your needs.  One advantage to a laminated closet is that when you move you can take it with you, laminated doors will keep your storage areas enclosed.

Built-in drawers easily take the place of your current dresser drawers.  A pull-out hamper unit will hide a removable hamper basket behind closed doors.  Jewelry can be stored in a velvet-lined jewelry drawer with small compartments to organize all of your jewelry.

Be creative when you cross obstacles.  Designing and building a unit around a door or window looks great and will add a focal point to your room.  A window seat placed under a window will give you additional storage and can become a nice cozy area to hide away and read.

Ideas for your new closet are endless.  Be sure to consider all of your storage needs when designing your new storage area  Creative Closets, Ltd can assist you in this task.  Your new closet will not only add beauty to your master bedroom but will meet all of your storage needs as well.

We remove our shoes when we enter our home; any hints on organizing them?       &nbsp...

We remove our shoes when we enter our home; any hints on organizing them?         First, determine the most common way you and our family enter your home; if you have a garage attached to your home, that may be the spot, or the most frequent access may be through the front or rear door.

Next, decide in which area you can organize those shoes.  An area in the garage, mud closet, or washer-dryer area may be suitable for storing your shoes.  Count the number of shoes needed to store in this area. Don't keep all the shoes in that space, just the shoes most often worn.

After finding an area and counting the shoes that needed to be stored there, measure the width of the broadest pair of shoes to determine how wide to make the shelves.  Slanted white ventilated steel shelves can organize your shoes, allow easy visibility, and allow air to circulate, causing your shoes and boots to dry quickly.

Solid laminated adjustable shelves can also hold shoes easily and allow you to adjust them up and down.  Another excellent idea is a shoe rack mounted on the back of the door or a wall in the garage near the home's entrance.

What are some ideas for organizing socks?         Socks are tough to keep in order.  Finding that "other" sock can be as difficult as finding that "other" shoe in the closet.

Start by removing all of the socks currently in your drawer.  Any socks that do not have a partner should be moved to the rag bin.  Divide your paired socks by color before returning them to your sock drawer.  If you have sporty socks, you may choose to keep these and bulkier socks in a separate drawer.

Storing socks in a wire drawer system will allow you to see into each bin without opening the drawer.  Fold socks in half and stack them side by side so they are easily visible and accessible.  Do not roll socks and fold over the end; this will only stretch your socks out of shape.

Socks and all your other needs can be stored in your existing closet.  Allow Creative Closets, Ltd. expert design staff to meet with you and start you on your road to organization.

I just moved and have many pictures to hang up. Can you give me some ideas?           Deciding where and how to hang pictures is a challenging task.  If you are starting, maybe consulting an interior decorator would help.  Interior decorators can help with the placement and execute that plan.  They can also be consulted if you decide this is not a chore you want to handle yourself.

If you have chosen to do this yourself, start with a plan.  Break this plan down into individual rooms.  Distribute your pictures and various pieces of artwork throughout your home.  Lay the pictures flat on the floor in front of the wall you are considering.  Take cardboard or paper and cut out templates to represent each picture.  Now, put a small piece of tape on the back of each template and arrange them on your wall.  This will give you a better visual idea of your wall's appearance.

When you are ready to hang your pictures, use the correct hardware designed to hold them.  When hardwiring your wall,  put a small masking tape to mark your spot, then drill into the tape.  This will prevent the wall from chipping.

If you hang pictures onto the wallpaper area, cut a "V" into the paper, lift the flap, and then insert the hardware.  This will allow you to remove the hardware and glue the "V" back down to the wall so you will never know it existed.

Creative Closets would like to wish you luck organizing your pictures.

My husband is 6'4" and I am 5'2". We need some help in organizing our closet!       ...
11/28/2023

My husband is 6'4" and I am 5'2". We need some help in organizing our closet!         Closets are a very personal thing.  If you share a closet with someone with a considerable height difference, consider the following hints when reorganizing your closet.

The standard placement of a double hanging rod is 42 and 64 inches from the floor.  The ideal height for reaching this area is 5'7" to 6'0".  A shelf and rod placed 72 inches from the floor will take care of your long-hanging needs and allow you space underneath for a slanted shoe shelf.

When double hanging an area for a person over six feet tall the top shelf and rod should be placed 88 to 90 inches from the floor and the lower rod 45 inches from the floor.  A person less than 5'6" will be comfortable if the rods are placed 40 and 80 inches from the floor.

Hanging slacks by the cuff takes up more space than folding them over the hanger.  To determine where to place the rods for your long hanging slacks, measure the length of a pair of pants and include the neck of the hangar.

Shoes should always be kept under your hanging wardrobe or in an area of their own.  With slanted shoe shelves or solid adjustable shelves, all of your shoes can be easily seen and accessed.  Shoe shelves should be the correct size to take care of each specific shoe size.

Creative Closets can work with you to custom design a closet to fit your needs.  Remember that a closet is very personal, so be sure it is made as efficient as possible.

What are some organizing hints for my china closet?          Having an organized china closet will be a great help to any dining area.  Eliminating a china cabinet or the clutter of a china cabinet can be the start of your organizational goal.

Start by determining exactly what you would like to store in this area.   Would you like to store china, silverware, and serving pieces here? Would you like to store table linens and napkins in this area?  After estimating your needs in this area, let's start organizing.

How you organize this space certainly depends on the size of your closet and your needs in this area; let's start organizing.

How you organize this space certainly depends on the size of your current closet.  Using solid adjustable shelves for storing china and glasses is ideal.  The adjustability will allow you to use that space efficiently.  Solid drawers or baskets are ideal for storing silverware and napkins.

Designing hanging space in your china closet should be considered for hanging your table linens neatly.  You can maximize the hanging space in this closet by upper and lower hanging in specific areas of this closet.  Storing large serving pieces can be done by placing vertical partitions every few inches.  Designate a particular area for this purpose.  A long, solid shelf can be used for storing table leaves.  These can be stored out of the way unless used frequently.  If you have a walk-in china closet, designing units with doors will help to prevent dust on your china pieces.

What are some creative kitchen hang up areas?          Overcrowded countertops can use up much of the valuable work area in your kitchen.  Utilizing the unused space on ceilings, walls, and cabinet interiors will add extra storage space to your kitchen.

Hanging items throughout your kitchen is one way to gain extra storage space.  When you are deciding exactly where to hang items in your kitchen, remember that most items that you are hanging will be easily seen.  For a more organized effect, group items according to their function, shape or size.

11/01/2023

What are some hints for organizing a work/office area in my kitchen?           First, consider what you plan to do in this new work area.  If you plan to do hobbies in this area, such as sewing, flower arranging, and art projects, plan accordingly.  Write down exactly what will be necessary for you in this area.  Now, let's start working.

Decide on what area in your kitchen will be best able to suit your needs.  If flower arranging or art is your hobby, having a sink nearby may be necessary.  Allow adequate storage for all the accessories needed in your hobby or work area.  Drawer storage or storage behind closed doors will also allow you ample storage and a finished outward appearance.

Designing a desktop in this area will be perfect for cutting coupons, paying bills, and looking for that great recipe.  Design a file drawer in this area to organize all of your bills.  If you plan to spend a fair amount of time here, keeping a phone close by will save you time and keep you close to your work.

When designing this newly organized space in your kitchen, always keep your needs in mind.  You will be spending many hours here, so your needs should be filled.  Enjoy your new work area!

10/31/2023

What Are Some Hints for a Laundry Chute?         A laundry chute is a beautiful, effortless way to direct laundry from the upper floors of a home down to the laundry area below.  Ideally, laundry chutes should be located in a central area of the home so everybody can access it.

Laundry chutes can be made out of various materials.  Plywood, sheet aluminum, or 18" diameter furnace heating duct are excellent materials for this area.  Consider the placement of your laundry chute while still in the blueprint stages of your new home or addition.

When designing your laundry chute, be sure that the opening of the chute is high enough off of the floor so that it doesn't intrigue children.  The opening of the chute should be a maximum of 12" square.  Placing a childproof lock on the door is an important safety feature.

Design a particular area at the bottom of your chute to catch your dirty laundry.  A stackable wire basket system works very well.  Place a solid shelf on top of the basket system, which will allow you an area to place the bin that will be catching all of the laundry.  Sorting the laundry can be done in the bins below.  When you have filled a basket, you know it's time to do the laundry.

The advantages achieved by using this system are fantastic.  You will no longer have to carry your laundry down numerous steps to the laundry area, and you will never have to sort your laundry on the floor again.  We hope you enjoy your new laundry chute and your organized laundry area.
