Gordon Moore Park Restoration

Gordon Moore Park Restoration Help Keep our Park in top condition! We are working to make it even better and we need your help. Buying a brick will push us on to our goal!

Forty Years ago, community leaders and the labor unions gave our area a wonderful gift - Gordon Moore Park. However, stunning as it once was, recent years have found the beauty subdued by rundown and outdated facilities. Undoubtedly, nearly everyone has visited Gordon Moore Park to watch children play soccer, enjoy the gorgeous rose garden, fish, or play a round of golf. Gordon Moore Park offers n

umerous types of recreation, but these visits also reveal our park is in need of a revitalization. Over one million cars visit Gordon Moore Park yearly. When someone visits what they see is a vision of our entire community. We must present ourselves better! Our park can be an economic engine for area businesses. A better park attracts more tournaments translating into dinners at area restaurants and booked rooms in our hotels. A renovation of this magnitude cannot be accomplished alone. Our goal is to raise $425,000 and start construction by Summer 2017. Four decades ago, we were handed this jewel. Now it is our turn to step up and create the success our community deserves. GOALS:
- All improvements implement ADA access
- New concession stand with seating area
- New Inclusive Playground with something for everychild
- Renovations to the Muenstermann Building
- New bathroom Facilities

This is a bathroom. As you can see it doesn't have a roof yet nor is it functional. But I think it was so wise to build it here. This new playground is great and lots of people are using it. But the nearest bathroom is across the busy main entrance. A long walk and very inconvenient at best. Even dangerous on a busy sports day. So part of the corporate sponsor money was used to build a new bathroom here on this side. Good idea, eh?

I went out in the rain this morning to the new building. Here's what I saw:

1. The building looks big. It's going to be very user friendly when it's done. That's cool.

2. It's a mess. But it's still a construction site. PJ is trying to keep the ball advancing but work is slow with volunteer labor.

3. The grass fields look so green! Michael Haynes has cultured some good turf! When spring arrives (eventually) we're going to have beautiful fields to play on.

Here are my notes from the March 7 meeting of the GMP restoration committee:

1. The colors are picked (mostly green), the building is hot (electricity), sewer is connected, the standing seam roof is scheduled, no water to the building yet, carpenters are installing the ceiling, lots of concrete sidewalks need done yet.

2. Dine out Tuesdays really helps the park effort. Last year's was a success ($4,000) and we hope to top that this year. Tuesday March 13 please eat at Bluff City Grill, Hi Flyers Grill, & Chez Marilyn. Hungry yet?

3. Footing and plumbing is in for the new bathroom by the new playground. The new play ground is getting lots of use (Yay!) and the surrounding fence is ordered.

4. We still have 3 pillars to sell to corporations, and 2,000 bricks to sell to Alton supporters. Who wouldn't want a brick at GMP?

5. Completion date still undetermined because of using volunteer labor. Progress has been steady but slow.

6. New road this Fall 2018.

Stay tuned.

Here is the latest: the bricklayers (God love them) have tented in the building and are putting up bricks in the cold. The electricians (God love them too) haven't been there lately due to ? But these guys are working for $0. God love them. When the electricians do their deal the ceiling can be installed. The footing is done for the new restroom next to the new playground. Plumbing should be done soon there and that building go up soon. (God loves plumbers too, right?) Also the fencing to go around the new playground is being shipped soon.

March 15 is the opening day of girls soccer and the new building will not be done by then. But soon afterward. The old building will remain up until the new building is functional. So when the new building is functional, the old building comes down and the big patio area is built where the old building is. Then the engraved bricks get put in the patio. Stay tuned for new developments and breaking news. Or post on here if you have better news than I do. BR

Dale Blachford was recognized at the RBGA dinner last night for his leadership at GMP. Being the humble leader he is, he gave most the credit to all the volunteers that have donated 660 hours and $300K+ to make this a reality. I sat next to PJ and asked him about progress. "They're getting the permanent power hooked up this week." he whispered "We're on track for using the building this Spring" Woo Hoo!

Already 100s of hours of volunteer labor have contributed to this wonderful structure going up in our park! Thanks to all in 2017/2018 and those of you in 1980 who worked even harder to give us this jewel of a park!

Our roof at GMP new building is getting put on today!!

The building is up! In case you haven't been out to GMP in this sub freezing weather, you may not have noticed that our new concession stand is standing! It may not look like much yet but it will be prettier when finished. Hurray!

The new structure at GMP is being built partially by volunteer labor. The trade unions were a major force is creating our park decades ago and they want to help out again in this renovation project. But they need to volunteer mostly on weekends and days off. We all have day jobs, right? So the construction schedule is slowed down because of this. But we really appreciate the trades as we're getting a much nicer building than if we were just using available funds the normal way. We just need to wait a little longer so the construction coordinator can work them in. Thanks a bunch guys! We really appreciate your contribution!

Concession stand foundation in place!! Soon the building will be up and we will be enjoying our park even more!!
